Since 1986, October 6 is marked as the “Mad Hatter Day”, a key character in Lewis Carroll’s classic “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”.
This holiday was created by a group of Colorado computer technicians, a bit bored with bits and bytes, who felt inspired by the Hatter and his silly tricks. Two years later it was recognised officially and received its first national press coverage.
“Mad as a hatter” is a colloquial phrase used in conversation to refer to a crazy person. It comes from the late 18th and early 19th centuries when mercury was used in the making of hats The exposure to this metal often affected the nervous systems of hatters, causing them to tremble and appear insane.
The date, October 6 was chosen because the original picture of the Mad Hatter by John Tenniel in “Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland” depicts him wearing a hat, bearing the note “In this Style 10/6” (where 10/6 refers to its cost: 10 shillings and 6 pence). The creators of the holiday – who are from the United States where the date is written in the month/day format – took this to set the date for the holiday: October 6 .

On this day, which fills the need for a second crazy day in the year, almost half a year from April Fools’ Day, people celebrate silliness and drop their assumptions about what must be proper and normal, perceiving how much of it is just silly.

Oggi, 6 ottobre, è la giornata mondiale del “Cappellaio matto”, in cui si celebra la stupidità, abbandonando le convenzioni e lasciandosi andare a tutto quello che negli altri giorni dell’anno è ritenuto un po’ folle.
La festa è nata nel 1986, da alcuni informatici Californiani che avvertirono la necessità di lasciarsi andare alla stupidità, per una volta.
La data fu scelta poiché nelle illustrazioni originali di John Tenniel in “Le avventure di Alice nel paese delle meraviglie”, di Lewis Carroll il Cappellaio Matto indossa un cappello su cui è affissa una targhetta che recita “In questo stile 10/6”. Questa cifra ne indica il costo (10 scellini e 6 penny), ma venne assunta come data, che in America viene indicata premettendo il mese al giorno. Per cui 10/6 indica il 6 ottobre

NB: I cappellai, in passato, erano spesso soggetti ad avvelenamento da mercurio – utilizzato per la produzione e lavorazione di cappelli, che causava problemi neurologici. In Inghilterra l’espressione “matto come un cappellaio” è abbastanza diffusa.
