Happy Birthday, Mickey Mouse!
Mickey Mouse, the official mascot of The Walt Disney Company, was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1928. This anthropomorphic mouse, who typically wears red shorts, large yellow shoes, and white gloves, has become one of the world’s most recognizable characters. He generally appears with his girlfriend Minnie Mouse, his pet dog Pluto, his friends Donald Duck and Goofy. Though originally characterized as a naughty antihero, Mickey was rebranded over time as an everyman, usually seen as a imperfect, but adventurous hero.
Mickey Mouse made his debut, November 18, 1928 in the film Steamboat Willie at the Colony Theater in New York City. It is a black-and-white animated short film, notable for being the first Disney cartoon with synchronized sound including character sounds and a musical score, featuring Walt Disney’s own voice for Mickey’s squeaks
Walt Disney said that silent film star Charlie Chaplin was one of the inspirations for the character of Mickey Mouse: “We wanted something appealing, and we thought of a tiny bit of a mouse that would have something of the wistfulness of Chaplin…a little fellow trying to do the best he could,”
Michey has appeared in over 130 films and has been featured extensively as a comic strip character. His self-titled newspaper strip ran for 45 years. Mickey has also appeared in comic books and in television series and in other media such as video games as well as merchandising, and is a meetable character at the Disney parks.
