There is a philosophy of love, a field of social philosophy and ethics, which attempts to explain the nature of love distinguishing between the various kinds of personal love, its value, and the impact it has on the autonomy of the lover and the beloved.
Many different theories try to account for the existence of love:
• psychological (love is very healthy behaviour)
• evolutionary (it is part of the process of natural selection)
• spiritual (it is a gift from a god)
• theories that consider it an unexplainable mystery, much like a mystical experience.
