EXACTLY 70 years ago today the world’s most notorious UFO mystery began after an “object” crashed near a ranch in the desert near Roswell, New Mexico
On 8 July 1947, the top story in the Roswell Daily Record was: “RAAF ( Roswell Army Air Field ) Captures Flying Saucer on Ranch in Roswell Region” .
The following day, an Air Force official stated that the alleged “flying saucer” was merely a conventional weather balloon. However, those who had seen the debris (or the newspaper photographs of it) were sure it wasn’t.
The incident then faded from public attention for more than 30 years, when ufologists began promoting a variety of theories, claiming that one or more alien spacecrafts had crash-landed, the military had recovered the extra-terrestrial occupants and then engaged in a cover-up.
In the 1990s, the US military published two reports revealing the true nature of the crashed object: it was a nuclear test surveillance balloon linked to a top-secret atomic espionage project called Project Mogul . However, the Roswell incident continues to be of interest in popular media, and hundreds of curiosity seekers visit the crash site every year.
Many books and articles have been published about Roswell and many different versions have been suggested…
… but what REALLY happened?
