I Have a Dream

August 28th is the anniversary of the “I Have a Dream” Speech , given by Martin Luther King, Jr. on August 28, 1963 at the historic “March on Washington.”

King’s memorable, repeated use of that phrase was not included in the written version of the speech, in which he had consciously decided to omit  it because already used in several other speeches.
During the first minutes King had basically delivered his prepared remarks, but when gospel singer Mahalia Jackson cried out: “Tell ‘em about the dream, Martin” he stopped reading his written notes, and began talking freely, describing his dreams of freedom and equality arising from a land of slavery and hatred.
“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal.”
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood..…

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today…..”
