Songs for Christmas: ” White Christmas”

WHITE CHRISTMAS
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be White.

The song “White Christmas” is one the most famous and popular Christmas songs. It was originally featured in the film “Holiday Inn” starring Bing Crosby. For this film the author, Irving Berlin,  had to write a song for each holiday for the entertainers to perform at the Holiday Inn. (The Holiday Inn hotel chain, which was founded some years later, took its name from this movie)
When this song that evokes holiday nostalgia was performed in the film Holiday Inn, where Bing Crosby sings it from the perspective of a New Yorker stuck in sunny California during Christmas, it began with the verse

“The sun is shining, the grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway
There’s never been such a day
In Beverly Hills, LA
But it’s December the 24th
And I’m longing to be up North”

This original first verse did not appear when Crosby recorded it for release as a single, because it didn’t make any sense outside of the context of the film.

This Christmas classic has been covered by a few Italian singers over the years. Some of them have sung the Italian version, whose title is “ Bianco Natale “

Col bianco tuo candor neve
sai dar la gioia ad ogni cuor.
E’ Natale ancora, la grande festa
che sa tutti conquistar.

Un canto vien dal ciel lento,
e con la neve dona a noi,
un Natale pieno d’amor,
un Natale di felicità.

Quel lieve tuo candor, neve
discende lieto nel mio cuor
nella notte Santa,
il cuore esulta d’amor,
è Natale ancor.

E viene giù dal ciel, lento
un dolce canto ammaliator,
che mi dice, spera anche tu
è Natale non soffrire più.

Tu neve scendi ancor lenta
per dare gioia ad ogni cuor
è Natale spunta la Pace Santa
l’Amor che sa conquistar.

Tu dici nel cader neve
il Cielo devi ringraziar!
Alza gli occhi guarda lassù
é Natale non si soffre più.

E’ Natale spunta la Pace Santa
l’Amor che sa conquistar.

Tu dici nel cader neve
il Cielo devi ringraziar!
Alza gli occhi guarda lassù
é Natale non si soffre più.
