REMEMBER

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann’d:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,

Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Ricordati di me quando me ne sarò andata via,
Andata via lontano nella terra del silenzio;
Quando non potrai più tenermi per mano,
Né io potrò girarmi a metà indecisa se andarmene o restare

Ricordati di me quando non potrai più giorno dopo giorno
Dirmi di un nostro futuro che avevi in mente
Semplicemente ricordati di me; sai
Che allora sarà tardi per consigli o preghiere.

Ma se tu dovessi scordarti di me per un attimo
E poi ricordare, non rattristarti:
Perché se tenebre e rovina lasceranno
Tracce dei pensieri che io ho avuto in vita,

Sarà molto meglio che tu ti scordi di me e sorrida,
Piuttosto che ricordare ed essere triste.
