Don’t Let That Horse . . .

Don’t let that horse
eat that violin

cried Chagall’s mother

But he
kept right on

And became famous

And kept on painting
The Horse With Violin In Mouth

And when he finally finished it
he jumped up upon the horse
and rode away
waving the violin

And then with a low bow gave it
to the first naked nude he ran across


And there were no strings

Non lasciare che quel cavallo
mangi quel violino

gridò la madre di Chagall

Ma lui
continuò imperterrito
a dipingere

E divenne famoso

E continuò a dipingere
il cavallo con violino in bocca

E quando finalmente lo finì
saltò su cavallo
e galoppò via
agitando il violino

E poi con un profondo inchino lo diede
al primo nudo artistico che incontrò

E non c’erano corde


Tutto ciò che ho sempre voluto fare è stato  dipingere luce sui muri della vita”.


Lawrence Monsanto Ferlinghetti (born March 24, 1919) is an American poet and painter and one of the founders of the Beat Movement in San Francisco in the mid-1950s
