Pantelleria

Questa terra “sperduta a occidente” è quella che Omero chiamava Ogigia, il luogo in cui Ulisse e la ninfa Calipso si amarono per sette anni.
Calipso, una bellissima ninfa, era stata costretta dagli dei, per punizione, a rimanere su Ogigia, un’isola che non ne ha altre nelle vicinanze, dove le Moire mandavano eroi bellissimi ed eroici di cui lei si innamorava, ma che dovevano partire.
Anche Ulisse era desideroso di tornare in patria, e Calipso, pur affranta, lo aiutò a partire.

Pantelleria is the island Homer called Ogygia, the place where the Greek hero Odysseus and Calypso loved each other for seven years.
Calypso was a beautiful nymph who had been forced by the gods, as a punishment, to stay on Ogigia where the three Moirai, the Fates, sent her beautiful and heroic heroes she fell in love with, but who had to leave.
According to Homer, Calypso detained Odysseus on Ogygia for seven years, wishing to marry him. Finally, though unwillingly, she instructed him to build a small raft, gave him food and wine, and let him leave.
