“Wonder” is a 2017 American comedy-drama film, based on the novel of the same name by Raquel Jaramillo Palacio, better known by her pen name R. J. Palacio, a graphic designer by day and a writer by night.
The novel was inspired by a chance encounter she had with a young girl while she was at an ice cream shop with her two sons. The girl had a very severe cranial facial difference, and her three-year-old son started crying hysterically.
Palacio, trying to protect the girl’s feelings, turned the stroller around and started pushing it away, but, for the rest of the day, she kept thinking about her family’s reaction to the girl and all the things she wished she’d said and done.
That girl, like the protagonist, was born with Treacher Collins syndrome, a genetic disorder characterized by deformities of the ears, eyes, cheekbones, and chin, which may bring to breathing problems, problems seeing, cleft palate, and hearing loss.
