📖 “A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading it. “
William Styron, author of “Sophie’s Choice” (11 June 1925-2006)

Ars Poetica
BY ARCHIBALD MACLEISH
A poem should be palpable and mute
As a globed fruit,
Dumb
As old medallions to the thumb,
Silent as the sleeve-worn stone
Of casement ledges where the moss has grown—
A poem should be wordless
As the flight of birds.
A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs,
Leaving, as the moon releases
Twig by twig the night-entangled trees,
Leaving, as the moon behind the winter leaves,
Memory by memory the mind—
A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs.
A poem should be equal to:
Not true.
For all the history of grief
An empty doorway and a maple leaf.
For love
The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea—
A poem should not mean
But be.

I didn’t know it.

It’s always been a favorite. I used it a lot when I taught poetry in university years ago.

Very true. I always wonder why I feel an overwhelming emptiness after finishing a good book. William Styron put it perfectly. Thank you for sharing this with us.

So true. Each time we read or re-read a book, we are older (at least) or in a different place in our lives or emotions. So each time is a different experience.

And we learn a lot while reading it. Every book has something you can learn, might not be obvious, but it is there! Thanks for this!
