I was just out of high school when I read his Berlin stories. No opening line has compelled me to continue reading as did “I am a camera …” The movie and play are fine, but that memory is a great reminder that experience of reading is greater than adaptations of a book into other formats. On a slightly different, point the loss of reading the stories of Victor Hugo has gone noticed, at least among readers of translations into English. No other GREAT author has been set in eclipse by Disney and Broadway as has VH.
