How Blue Can You Get

I’ve been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met
I said I’ve been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met
Our love is nothing but the blues, woman
Baby, how blue can you get?

You’re evil when I’m with you
And you are jealous when we’re apart
Yes, I said you’re evil
You’re so evil when I’m with you, baby
And you are jealous when we’re apart
How blue can you get, baby?
The answer’s is right here in my heart

I gave you a brand-new Ford
You said I want a Cadillac
I bought you a ten dollar dinner
You said thanks for the snack
I let you live in my penthouse
You said it was just a shack
I gave you seven children
And now you want to give them back

Yes, I’ve been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met
I said our love is nothing but the blues
Baby, how blue can you get?

  1. BB King and his guitar, Lucille. Here’s an interesting tidbit on why BB King called his guitars Lucille:

“Once outside however, King realized that he had left his guitar inside so he went back into the burning building to retrieve his beloved $30 Gibson guitar. King learned the next day that the two men that started the fire had been fighting over a woman who worked at the hall named Lucille.”

  2. The closest I ever got to seeing BB King was passing his bus on I-81 North back in the 1990s when I was returning to the DC area from Asheville, NC. His name was scrolled on the side fo the bus. It was the first weekend in August but I don’t know which year or where he was touring. A great human being and talented musician.

  3. I didn’t see BB live, but did see and meet Albert Hammond, who let me try his Flying V Gibson guitar (unbelievably high strings), and backstage with John Hammond – Paul Butterfield, and had drinks with Levon Helm, among a few I’ve met..
