The Addams Family

 

On Friday 18 September 1964 the ABC TV network introduced The Addams Family, a sitcom based on the macabre cartoons of Charles Addams in the magazine The New Yorker.
The 30-minute series was shot in black-and-white and aired for two seasons (64 episodes).

The Addamses are an extended family with macabre interests and supernatural skills. They include Gomez Addams and his refined wife, Morticia, their two children, Wednesday and Pugsley, and other members such as Uncle Fester and Grandmama, a towering butler, a disembodied hand that usually appears out of a small wooden box, and sometimes Gomez’s Cousin Itt.

The incredibly catchy theme song, written and arranged by Vic Mizzy, was dominated by a harpsichord with finger snaps as percussive accompaniment,

  1. I’m in the minority here, I know but I did NOT like this program and found it contrived. I also did not like The Munsters for the same reason and found it degrading for Yvonne De Carlo to go from Sephora in The Ten Commandments to playing Lily Munster. The tune? Yes, very catchy and enduring. It is still played at sporting events all over the USA during breaks and to “pep up” the home team.
