On 19 September 1960, Chubby Checker’s The Twist reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was a cover version of the rhythm and blues hit “The Twist” by Hank Ballard and The Midnighters.

It gave rise to a dance craze,  popular because it was  easy to do, and it was also a dance where the participants didn’t touch each other, which became a new trend, especially with disco dancing. Anyway, it also triggered controversies because some people felt it was too provocative.

The twist had already become popular, a few weeks earlier, when Chubby Checker had danced it while singing his song on the “Dick Clark Show”  (6 August 1960).
