Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Physician and writer, he created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 when he published “A Study in Scarlet”, the first of sixty mystery stories featuring the famous detective and his loyal assistant Dr. Watson.
Here are three quotes from his novels, which I think are always topical:
① “It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts”
② “Data! Data! Data! I can’t make bricks without clay.”
③ “We must look for consistency. Where there is a want of it we must suspect deception.”
① “È un errore capitale teorizzare prima di avere i dati. Senza accorgersene, si comincia a deformare i fatti per adattarli alle teorie, invece di adattare le teorie ai fatti “
② “Dati! Dati! Dati! Non posso fabbricare mattoni senza l’argilla.”
③ “Dobbiamo cercare la coerenza. Dove non c’è coerenza c’è inganno.”
