“Black Like Me” 📕

Black like me

The title of John Howard Griffin’s book, “Black Like Me”, where he gave readers a courageous view of the Jim Crow South, was taken from the last line of the poem “Dream variations” by Langston Hughes  (You can find it here: “Dream Variations” )

A few quotes from the book:

🟥“He who is less than just is less than man.”

🟧“If virtue does not equal powers, powers will be misused.”

🟨“I’m annoyed by those who love mankind but are discourteous to people.”

🟩“For so long as we condone injustice by a small but powerful group, we condone the destruction of all social stability, all real peace, all trust in man’s good intentions toward his fellow man.”

🟦“This tendency to make laws that are convenient or advantageous rather than right has mushroomed.”

🟫“Every fool in error can find a passage of scripture to back him up”

🟥🟧🟨🟩🟦🟪🟫

  2. This book impacted me back in middle school half a century ago.
“Every fool in error can find a passage of scripture to back him up” AMEN! Hearing the Bible quoted out of context is a pet peeve of mine. It’s the reason I stopped memorizing Scripture verses one at a time and started committing to memory whole chapters and whole books of the Bible. Context is SO important. And the overwhelming context of Scripture is LOVE – love for God and for one another.
