🎶 Maybellene 🎶

On 27 July 1955 Chuck Berry‘s first hit record, “Maybellene” entered the Billboard R&B chart and propelled by its persistent driving rhythm, remained on the pop charts for eleven weeks.
It is considered a pioneering rock and roll song., and one of the first records to be a hit on the rhythm and blues, country and western, and pop charts.
It evolved out of a traditional country tune called “Ida Red” that Berry had heard on a radio station in St. Louis.

Maybellene is about a girl who keeps cheating on her man and about a car race. It is the story of a man driving a V8 Ford who is chasing his unfaithful girlfriend in her Cadillac Coupe de Ville.
Berry was 29 years old when he recorded this song, but he knew that his audience was really young, so he wrote this song to appeal to teenagers, because its themes were cars, speed and sexuality.

There are different versions on how the song got its name. The working title was “Ida Mae,” but the record producer didn’t like the name, because it was too rural, and too similar to “Ida Red”.

Berry said that Maybellene was the name of a cow in a child’s nursery rhyme, but others recalled that there was a box of Maybelline mascara in the recording studio, which gave the idea for the title.

🎶  Maybellene  🎶

Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
You’ve started back doing the things you used to do.

As I was motivatin’ over the hill
I saw Maybellene in a Coupe de Ville.
A Cadillac a-rollin’ on the open road,
Nothin’ will outrun my V8 Ford.
The Cadillac doin’ ’bout ninety-five,
She’s bumper to bumper rollin’ side by side.

Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
You’ve started back doing the things you used to do.

Pink in the mirror on top of the hill,
It’s just like swallowin’ up a medicine pill.
First thing I saw that Cadillac grille
Doin’ a hundred and ten gallopin’ over that hill.
Offhill curve, a downhill stretch,
Me and that Cadillac neck by neck.

Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
You’ve started back doing the things you used to do.

The Cadillac pulled up ahead of the Ford,
The Ford got hot and wouldn’t do no more.
It then got cloudy and it started to rain,
I tooted my horn for a passin’ lead
The rain water blowin’ all under my hood,
I knew that was doin’ my motor good.

Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
You’ve started back doing the things you used to do.

The motor cooled down, the heat went down
And that’s when I heard that highway sound.
The Cadillac a-sittin’ like a ton of lead
A hundred and ten a half a mile ahead.
The Cadillac lookin’ like it’s sittin’ still
And I caught Maybellene at the top of the hill.

Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can’t you be true?
You’ve started back doing the things you used to do.

🎶  John Lennon once said: “If you tried to give rock ‘n’ roll another name, you might have called it Chuck Berry

Maybellene, perché non riesci a essere sincera?
Maybellene, perché non riesci a essere sincera?
Hai ricominciato a comportarti come in passato.

siamo paraurti contro paraurti, corriamo fianco a fianco.

Maybellene, perché non riesci a essere sincera?
Maybellene, perché non riesci a essere sincera?
Hai ricominciato a comportarti come in passato.

Hai ricominciato a comportarti come in passato.

Poi diventò nuvoloso e cominciò a piovere,

Hai ricominciato a comportarti come in passato.

a centodieci, mezzo miglio avanti.
La Cadillac sembrava immobile
e io raggiunsi Maybellene in cima alla collina.

Maybellene, perché non riesci a essere sincera?
Maybellene, perché non riesci a essere sincera?
Hai ricominciato a comportarti come in passato.

  2. I’ve heard this song many dozens of times but never knew all the lyrics. Once it starts playing I start bopping and moving and not paying attention. This song will make a dead man dance!
