Blue Monday: {[W + (D − d)] × T …

Today 18 January 2021 is Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year, a day that presents a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights and the guilt felt because none of New Year’s resolutions has been kept yet.

The concept was first published in a 2005 press release from a British holiday company (broadcast on the TV channel Sky Travel) which had asked psychologist Cliff Arnall for a “scientific formula” for the January blues.

Arnall claimed to have precisely calculated the date using an “equation” that takes into account various factors such as weather, low motivational levels, salary, time since Christmas, time spent on various activities (cultural activities, relaxing, sleeping, packing, in a state of stress), time since failing our new year’s resolutions, , the feeling of a need to take action. Anyway, no units of measurement were defined, nor explanations for what is meant by “weather” or “low motivational levels”. Therefore, the homogeneity of the “formula” cannot be assessed or verified, rendering it quite meaningless.

Even though there is no scientific evidence to suggest the third Monday of the year is more or less depressing than any other day, today might be used as a focus for making things better.

This pseudo-scientific theory, which still trends on social media, is used by some companies for advertising and marketing purposes. They exploit this period to promote their products: well-being and fitness items, self-improvement and happiness boosting tools, as well as holidays, especially to the Southern Hemisphere, since the date, which depends also on weather conditions, only applies to the Northern Hemisphere.

Good news: Arnall said he also calculated the happiest day of the year, which falls close to Midsummer, between June 21 and 24, in the Northern Hemisphere.

  1. Martin Luther King’s life and work is being celebrated here today. We are descending the mountain whose top he was graced to see and his successor at the Ebenezer Baptist Church Atlanta, the Revd. Raphael Warnock, is with us, the first US Senator of his race to be elected from Georgia.

It remains somewhat blue here but more and more the blue is receding into our skies. Only there!

    1. I know, today is Martin Luther King’s day and I am really happy to hear that Revd. Raphael Warnock is the first Afro- American senator elected from Georgia.
Let’s hope this is the beginning of better times.🙏
      For everyone!!!

  2. I don’ trust in equations which has random value terms, and , peus puru (also worse) with no precise definitions. In my last 13 years of work, my blue day was the tuesday. On mondays, six hours of work; on tuesdays, 9 work hours – like also on thursdays to have saturdays free, and complete the 36 weekly hours within friday. This is referred to a personal situation of mine; but reeally don’t believe that the third day of the year can be caluclated as the worst day of the year.
I faund a little more sense in “Murphy’s formulas”, tough they themselves have not a scientific solid base.
Do you know Drake equation about the odd of finding a number of alien civilizations in the universe? The result could be billions of “mankind like races” (this my hope…), or ..none.. The equatioin has only letters. For instance, “N” is the number of sunlike stars”, “x” the numbber of earth like planets, y – for example..- the number of years necessary to obtain a life that has grown enough to be rganizated in a complex brain and develope technology… It happens tnat a believer, for some of this terms, puts big and high numbers beside dhe letters (surely for the number of stars like the sun), , the skeptic put little numbers, if not “zero” at all (of course, except for the number of stars…). Some scientist say “we are alone” (Antonio Zichichi is on of these. I admire him, but about this, I hope he’ s quite wrong!), and some others say that the alien words “inhabitated by forms of intelligent life ” are so many. Both, based on the Drake Equation! Ciao 🙂

    1. I have always been fascinated by the possibilities of other intelligent lives in the universe, and I like to believe that there are many more.
As for “intelligent” lives, I don’t know if mankind, seen from a higher mind, can be considered as such

      1. Maybe mankind Is not the higher mind, in the universe. But on the earth man Is the higher mind . Don’think for a while about moral ethic questions (we are bad(cattivi ), don’t:respect nature and do One, and anyway many good and Wise human beings exist!!!!), but the brain level of man (that producted piyhagora’s theorem, “divine comemdy”, “Amleto”, music, , la Gioconda, the landing on Moon . ), math equatoons….
And we can anyway think that man like beings in the universe can exist at different levels. In many planets man shaped beings could be at low level, in other planets, higher.
It Is true, here we have had humans like “Hitler”, but Also humans like Gandhi.
We could be , in the universe, an “intermedium level” intelligent Life. Neither the best, nor the worst. Evolution of Life Is a. La vita è un cammino. Ciao 🙂

      2. For a higher mind we can be sera as less intelligent but anyway..intelligent. Difficult for me ti writer in English, expecially using smartphone. Uffff 🙂
Discorso lunghetto, e complesso. ciao 🙂

      1. 😲 You are right! Her name is Scarlett in English 😏😃😏
Here in Italy it’s chilly and grey. It’s only 3,35 pm and although the days have gotten a little longer it looks like late afternoon

  3. Ri pubblicato.

  4. lol… I always thought Blue Monday was the title of a New Order song. 😀
I make up at least one equation like this a year for quizzes. My students then either have to do dimensional analysis to figure out the units of a variable (all other units given), or figure out what a graph of one variable as a function of another looks like. Recent examples have included my cumulative chocolate consumption as a function of time, number of exams marked, number remaining, average grade, etc…
