A Hard Day’s Night πŸŽΆ

On 16 April 1964, Β The Beatles recorded A Hard Day’s Night, one of their first hit singles, at EMI Studios in London.Β Β

It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog
It’s been a hard day’s night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I’ll find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright

You know I work all day to get you money to buy you things
And it’s worth it just to hear you say you’re going to give me everything
So why on earth should I moan, ’cause when I get you alone
You know I feel ok

When I’m home everything seems to be right
When I’m home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah

It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog
It’s been a hard day’s night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I’ll find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright, oww

So why on earth should I moan, ’cause when I get you alone
You know I feel ok

When I’m home everything seems to be right
When I’m home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah

Oh, it’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog
It’s been a hard day’s night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I’ll find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I feel alright
You know I feel alright

The title of the song was taken from Β a comment made by Ringo Starr, the Beatles’ drummer, at the end of a particularly long session in the recording studio. Β Before going home he had started to say ‘It’s been a hard day’ s … (work) but noticing they had been working so long that Β it was night-time,Β  he concluded β€œnight”.

The Beatles said that Ringo used to say grammatically incorrect phrases, making them laugh. According to them these little malapropisms (‘Ringoisms‘)Β  were β€œwonderful, very lyrical, very Lewis Carroll, lovely”

John Lennon liked the phrase so much that he had alreadyΒ  used it in a poem entitled “Sad Michael” heΒ  had written for his book “In His Own Write.

This catchy  phrase summed up the frenetic pace of The Beatles’ existence at the time. The lyrics speak about the singer’s devotion to his lover, and how he works really hard so that she can buy anything she wants. He is tired,  but when he comes home from work, the things that his lover does reward him.

Β At the time Lennon, who wrote the lyrics,Β  was married to Cynthia Powell and the emotions he felt affected the song. Their marriage did not last long: a few years later he left her and their son Julian for Yoko Ono.

  1. It’s a favourite song of mine and I play it quite often on the guitar. Of course, the opening chord has been the subject of much conjecture over the years, but I am happy I play it exactly as it was meant to be. My wife and I were fortunate enough to see Paul a couple of years ago (and play it of course) and Ringo a few years before that where he did a fabulous rendition of With A little Help From My Friends.

  2. For me, this album was the Beatles at their best – and that’s saying something. They still had the raw talent that made them so special in the first place, but also showed that they had so much more to come. Just my opinion of course. Thanks for the background info Luisa.

  3. Yes, it is a great song. I am grown up with the Beatles and have a lot of memories. It is something special in this song: in the beginning, there is a hit on the guitar that sounds like an unusual accord but works exactly and became a famous accord. πŸ˜‰πŸ’–πŸ˜ŽπŸŒΉ
