WATERLOO
My, my
At Waterloo, Napoleon did surrender
Oh, yeah
And I have met my destiny in quite a similar way
The history book on the shelf
Is always repeating itself
Waterloo
I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo
Promise to love you forever more
Waterloo
Couldn’t escape if I wanted to
Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
Wa-Wa-Wa-Wa-Waterloo
Finally facing my Waterloo
My, my
I tried to hold you back, but you were stronger
Oh, yeah
And now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo
I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo
Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo
Couldn’t escape if I wanted to
Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
Wa-Wa-Wa-Wa-Waterloo
Finally facing my Waterloo
So how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo
Couldn’t escape if I wanted to
Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
Wa-Wa-Wa-Wa-Waterloo
Finally facing my Waterloo
Ooh-ooh, Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
Wa-Wa-Wa-Wa-Waterloo
Finally facing my Waterloo
Ooh-ooh, Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo is the place where Napoleon Bonaparte met his final defeat at an epic battle in 1815. This battle and defeat are used as a metaphor for a woman who gives in and falls in love with a man. She “surrenders” to him and promises to love him: he is her “Waterloo.” But she doesn’t mind “losing” because the result is that she is now with her lover.
The Battle of Waterloo marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars and was fought near Waterloo village, in Belgium on 18 June 1815: Napoleon’ army (72,000 soldiers) was defeated by an Anglo-led allied European coalition of 120,000 British, Dutch, Belgian and German soldiers.
After it, Bonaparte retreated to France abdicated (again) and was exiled to the remote, British-held island of Saint Helena, in the South Atlantic Ocean., where he died on 5th May 1821, at age 51, most likely from stomach cancer.
Tesoro mio
E come potrei mai rifiutare
Mi sembra di vincere anche se perdo

Coincidentally I was just reading about the battle of Waterloo yesterday – but in the context of the history of triage and its inventor Baron Dominique-Jean Larrey. 🙂

Ahh , thank you for this lovely post. I know ABBA well, almost every song. I was there when they won with Waterloo and cheered along.
Many of their more serious songs are among my favourites.
Beautiful presentation, Luisa.

Wonderful lyrics. “I feel like I win when I lose” and the reverse is equally plausible “I feel like I lose when I win.” LOL. Love is a mess, but we love it nonetheless.

Great song and great group! I got a kick (so to speak) out of the guys wearing high-heel platform shoes. Styles come and go. I’m glad that one went and hasn’t returned…at least not for guys.

I used to love to run and work out to ABBA’s songs, because most of them were so upbeat, and I still love them. But honestly, these days of the “Me Too” movement, when even the Looney Tunes character Pepe le Pew got cancelled (🙄), I’m not sure how this song survived, much less won such a prestigious award.

… in modo indiretto, la canzone ricorda quella disfatta; una lei che si arrende a un lui, ma una resa così è come una vittoria…

nella canzone di certo. Nella battaglia per Napoleone significò la resa.
