Daphne Du Maurier

Daphne du Maurier, born on 13 May 1907, was an English novelist and playwright.

After publishing her first novel, “The Loving Spirit”, when she was only 22, she went on writing other works, many of  which were successfully adapted into films, including the novels “Rebecca” (see here), “Frenchman’s Creek”, “My Cousin Rachel”, “Jamaica Inn”, and the haunting story that became a terrifying Hitchcock film, “The Birds”.

“Sometimes it’s a sort of indulgence to think the worst of ourselves. We say, ‘Now I have reached the bottom of the pit, now I can fall no further,’ and it is almost a pleasure to wallow in the darkness. The trouble is, it’s not true. There is no end to the evil in ourselves, just as there is no end to the good. It’s a matter of choice. We struggle to climb, or we struggle to fall. The thing is to discover which way we’re going.”

“A volte è una sorta di  compiacimento che ci fa pensare il peggio di noi stessi. Diciamo: “Ora ho toccato il fondo, non posso piombare più in basso” ed è quasi un piacere sguazzare nella tenebra. Il problema è che non è vero. Non c’è fine al male in noi stessi, così come non c’è fine al bene. È una questione di scelta. Noi lottiamo per sollevarci oppure lottiamo per cadere. L’importante è scoprire in quale direzione stiamo andando. “

  1. Quanto mi piaceva questa autrice!!! Ho letto i suoi libri molto prima dei vent’anni ! Rebecca la prima moglie, l’ho adorato e Mia cugina Rachele mi ha tenuto col fiato sospeso fino all’ultima pagina. Successivamente ho visto anche i film, molto bene riportati sullo schermo. Grazie Luisa per avermela ricordata!!! 🙂

  2. As a teenager, I loved Daphne Du Marier. I even re-read Manderley this past year. My favorite is probably Frenchman’s Creek. Her characters, plots, and settings were all very vivid.
