On 4 September 1998, Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google, when they were students at Stanford University in California.
They had first met in the summer of 1995, when Page was visiting Stanford University for a tour of its campus and Brin, who was a second-year grad student, had volunteered as a guide for prospective students. Page was in Brin’s group and the two seemed to disagree on everything. But their obsession with backlinks brought them together and the following year they started to work on a PhD project.
Combining their knowledge of math and computer science, they began investigating how they could use math properties as a way to organize information and built a search algorithm able to take into account links and their importance.
They originally nicknamed their new search engine “BackRub”, because the system checked backlinks and ranked them to estimate the importance of a site.
Eventually, they changed the name to Google, a play on the word “googol“, the mathematical expression for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros which was picked to signify that the search engine was intended to provide large quantities of information available on the web.

Today the term google has also become a verb: To google, or search on the net.

Si erano incontrati per la prima volta nell’estate del 1995, quando Page era in visita alla Stanford University per un tour del campus e Brin, che era uno studente del secondo anno, si era offerto volontario come guida per potenziali studenti. Page finì nel gruppo di Brin e i due sembrarono non essere d’accordo su nulla . Ma la loro ossessione per i link di collegamento fu l’inizio di qualcosa di grosso e l’anno successivo iniziarono a lavorare assieme su un progetto di dottorato.
Combinando le loro conoscenze di matematica e informatica. Iniziarono a studiare come utilizzare le proprietà matematiche per organizzare le informazioni e costruirono un algoritmo di ricerca in grado di tenere conto dei collegamenti e valutarne l’importanza.
Originariamente avevano chiamato il loro nuovo motore di ricerca “BackRub”, perché il sistema controllava i backlink (link di collegamento) e li classificava per valutare l’importanza di un sito.
Alla fine, cambiarono il nome in Google, un gioco sulla parola “googol”, l’espressione matematica per il numero 1 seguito da 100 zeri , scelta effettuata per indicare che il motore di ricerca era destinato a fornire grandi quantità di informazioni disponibili sul web.
Oggi il termine Google è diventato anche un verbo che significa cercare in rete.
