Mother, do you think they’ll drop the bomb?
Mother, do you think they’ll like the song?
Mother, do you think they’ll try to break my balls?
Ooh
Mother, should I build the wall?
Mother, should I run for president?
Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Ooh
Is it just a waste of time?
This song is about the relationship of a depressed rock star named Pink with his mother: he looks to her for guidance and advice, she responds by inadvertently adding bricks to his metaphorical wall through her over-protection and strong need to keep him safe. But in so doing she not only defends him but also isolates from the world.
Pink begins by expressing his fears to his mother, seeking comfort from her
His overprotective mother thinks she is warning him and sheltering him away from a cruel, dark world, but instead she is only damaging his self-esteem and social skills. She makes him timid and afraid: he feels vulnerable and constantly seeks her approval for everything he does.
Hush now baby, baby, don’t you cry
Mama’s gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Mama’s gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama’s gonna keep you right here under her wing
She won’t let you fly but she might let you sing
Mama’s gonna keep baby cosy and warm
Ooh baby
Ooh baby
Ooh baby, of course mama’s gonna help build the wall
These words, switching from “mother” to “mama”, are the answer of Pink’s mother who is trying to reassure him . Yet, her words do not seem to reassure her frightened son, but to reinforce his fears and put some of her own into him in order to protect him. What she does is surely done out of love, which makes her role in isolating and hurting Pink all the more tragic.
The idea of keeping him under her wing generally implies support and comfort. But here Pink’s mother, who believes that home is the only safe place from what she perceives to be a real and constant threat, is preventing him from achieving his full potential.
Mother do you think she’s good enough?
For me?
Mother do you think she’s dangerous
To me?
Mother will she tear your little boy apart?
Ooh, ah
Mother will she break my heart?
Pink is now asking his mother about a potential girlfriend, feeling the need to get validation from her and seeking assurance that the girl will be a good choice.
Hush now baby, baby, don’t you cry
Mama’s gonna check out all your girlfriends for you
Mama won’t let anyone dirty get through
Mama’s gonna wait up until you get in
Mama will always find out where you’ve been
Mama’s gonna keep baby healthy and clean
Ooh baby, ooh baby
Ooh baby, you’ll always be baby to me
The mother here seems to be trying to keep her son separated from his sexuality and from love, because she is aware that they can be deceitful and painful. She does not accept these as necessary experiences and helps wall him in so he won’t suffer
However, while trying to protect him she is ultimately isolating him and preventing him from growing into a man.
The wall she’s helping build is hinted at in the final line:
Mother, did it need to be so high?
which refers to the metaphorical wall constructed by Pink. In this line, he’s asking her whether she really needed to be one of the primary factors of his high wall
In a 1979 interview, Waters said “If you can level one accusation at mothers, it is that they tend to protect their children too much. Too much and for too long. That’s all. This isn’t a portrait of my mother, although one or two of the things in there apply to her as well as to I’m sure lots of other people’s mothers.”
Thirty years later, in 2009, he explained to Mojo magazine that the overly protective suffocating mother portrayed in the song had some similarities to his own mum . However, she didn’t recognize herself in the song because “the song is more general, the idea that we can be controlled by our parents’ views on things like sex. The single mother of boys, particularly, can make sex harder than it needs to be.”
Oh piccolo, oh piccolo
Oh piccolo, sarai sempre bambino per me

You are most welcome!! 🙂 Yes, I think the song is focused on the idea of an overbearing and overprotective mother rather than just one 😉

Its a sad tragedy, but I love how he’s showing that even the things done out of love can be harmful to others.

It’s a real tragedy indeed, when love can be harmful to others…. especially for a mother towards her children

Eppure mia madre è stata talmente grande!
Odio i muri …

Buonanotte mia cara Luisa.. a domani
