Thomas Stearns Eliot, the great poet, was born on 26 September 1888, in St. Louis, Missouri. He moved to England when he was 25, eventually renouncing his American citizenship and becoming a British citizen.
He was also a playwright and his first play was “The Rock” written and performed in 1934 to raise money for the building of new churches in the Diocese of London.
For that production the Bishop of Chichester connected him with producer E. Martin Browne , who later commissioned Eliot to write another play, the famous, “Murder in the Cathedral”, concerning the death of Thomas Becket.
After that, Eliot wrote other plays for more general audiences: “The Family Reunion” , “The Cocktail Party” , “The Confidential Clerk”, and “The Elder Statesman”.
“The Rock” speaks about mankind’s relation to God and the implications of a world lived without religion.
It is a pageant play, an elaborate production including much pageantry, mimetic action, and ballet.
The action turns upon the efforts and material and moral difficulties of a group of London masons in building a church. The episodes are linked together by a chorus, which comments both on the action of the play and on the problems of the Church.
Much of the play was a collaborative effort: Eliot accepted credit only for the authorship of one scene and the choruses, which proved an exceptional achievement.
“Choruses from The Rock” are quoted by Pope Francis in his first encyclical “Lumen Fidei”, a theological document in which Francis says that faith illuminates the path of the Christian.
Here are some memorable lines from the first chorus:
All our knowledge brings us nearer to our ignorance,
All our ignorance brings us nearer to death,
But nearness to death no nearer to God .
Where is the Life we have lost in living?
Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?

Fu anche un drammaturgo e la sua prima opera teatrale fu “The Rock”, scritta e rappresentata nel 1934 allo scopo di raccogliere fondi per la costruzione di nuove chiese nella diocesi di Londra.
Per quella produzione il vescovo di Chichester, lo mise in contatto con il produttore E. Martin Browne, che in seguito incaricò Eliot di scrivere un’altra opera teatrale “Murder in the Cathedral” (Assassinio nella Cattedrale) riguardante la morte del martire Thomas Becket.
In seguito Eliot compose lavori teatrali di argomento più generale: “The Family Reunion” ( la riunione di famiglia), “The Cocktail Party” , “The Confidential Clerk” (L’impiegato di fiducia) e “The Elder Statesman” ( Il grande Statista).
“The Rock” tradotto come “La Rocca” parla del rapporto dell’uomo con Dio e delle implicazioni di un mondo senza religione.
Si tratta di “pageant play”, un’elaborata rappresentazione teatrale che include ricostruzioni storiche, mimo e balletto, e la sua azione si incentra sugli sforzi e le difficoltà materiali e morali di un gruppo di muratori londinesi impegnati nella costruzione di una chiesa. I vari episodi sono collegati tra loro da un coro, che commenta sia l’azione sia le problematiche della Chiesa.
Gran parte dell’opera fu una collaborazione ed Eliot accettò il merito solo per la composizione di una scena e dei cori, che si rivelarono eccezionali.
Questi cori furono citati da papa Francesco nella sua prima enciclica “Lumen Fidei”, documento di insegnamento teologico in cui il papa afferma che la fede illumina il cammino del cristiano.
Ecco alcuni versi memorabili tratti del primo coro:
Tutta la nostra conoscenza ci avvicina all’ignoranza,
tutta la nostra ignoranza ci avvicina alla morte,
ma la vicinanza alla morte non significa essere più vicini a Dio.

Wow, beautiful chorus. I can just imagine the performance. Love to be one there to watch it. Too bad nowadays we don’t perform most of the old plays, only very few of the old plays being performed regularly.
