The Eagle 🦅

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during much of Queen Victoria’s reign, was known for his vivid imagery and melodic poetic diction
He died on 6 October 1892.

The Eagle

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring’d with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

This poem, published in 1851, is one of Lord Tennyson’s shortest pieces of literature.
In these two stanzas of three lines each, Tennyson uses the technique of alliteration, which is repetition of similar sounds in the beginning of words, as well as personification (crooked ‘hands’) and simile (‘like a thunderbolt’).

The poem portrays not only the power of an eagle, its swiftness and agility, its freedom and beauty, but also its solitude on that rocky cliff.

“The Eagle” was inspired by Tennyson’s travels in the Pyrenees, on the Franco-Spanish border, where he frequently saw eagles, raptors, and other birds of prey circling overhead

In turn, it was a source of inspiration to Ted Hughes’ poem “Hawk Roosting”

L’aquila

Questa poesia, pubblicata nel 1851, è una delle composizioni più brevi di Tennyson: solo due strofe di tre versi ciascuna, in cui il poeta utilizza magistralmente la tecnica dell’allitterazione, cioè la ripetizione di suoni simili all’inizio di varie parole, oltre a personificazione e similitudine.

La poesia ritrae non solo il potere dell’aquila, la sua rapidità e agilità, la sua libertà e bellezza, ma anche la sua solitudine su quello sperone roccioso.

Tennyson trasse ispirazione dai suoi viaggi nei Pirenei, al confine franco-spagnolo, dove poté ammirare aquile e altri rapaci che volteggiavano in alto

A sua volta “The Eagle” divenne fonte di ispirazione per la poesia “Hawk Roosting” di Ted Hughes
