Being a Boswell

The phrase “to be a Boswell/ someone’s Boswell” was inspired by the relationship between James Boswell and Samuel Johnson.

Boswell’s “Life of Johnson” remains the most famous biography in any language, one of Western literature’s greatest achievements, unprecedented in its depth of research and its extensive use of private correspondence and conversation recorded on the spot, transforming all of them into detailed lifelike portrait. Using flattering and cunning questions, Boswell induced Johnson to give his best by making him talk.
He succeeded in elevating the life of his older friend to epic stature, and masterfully described the minute details of his life. also thanks to his legal training and the touch of an expert journalist.
Without diminishing the stature of Johnson, Boswell is now considered not only a faithful recorder of an extraordinary personality, but the creator of a masterpiece.

“The Life” had a great influence on later biographies, and the expression “being someone’s Boswell” came to mean a constant companion, observer and life chronicler of that person.
Its most famous example is probably in Arthur Conan Doyle‘s “A Scandal in Bohemia” (1891), in which Sherlock Holmes affectionately says of Dr. Watson, “I am lost without my Boswell.”

Later, historian Thomas Macaulay (1800-1859) called Boswell’s worship of Dr. Johnson “Lues Boswelliana.”
In his “Critical and Historical Essays: Contributed to the Edinburgh Review” he wrote:
“Biographers, translators, editors, all, in short, who employ themselves in illustrating the lives or writings of others, are peculiarly exposed to the Lues Boswelliana, or disease of admiration.”

Her regarded the biographer’s tendency to magnify his subject as a disease, from Latin lues (“plague”).

Yesterday Malc ( https://www.easymalc.co.uk/) asked this question: “We know quite a lot about Samuel Johnson because James Boswell wrote about him, but did anyone write a biography of James Boswell do you know?“
I found out that one of the biographies about biographer James Boswell was “The Moth and the Candle” written by Iain Finlayson. The title is a reference to a conversation between Boswell and Johnson,

“I teized him with fanciful apprehensions of unhappiness. A moth having fluttered round the candle, and burnt itself, he laid hold of this little incident to admonish me saying, with a sly look, and in a solemn but quiet tone, ‘That creature was its own tormentor, and I believe its name was Boswell.’

La frase “essere un Boswell/il Boswell di qualcuno” fu ispirata dalla relazione tra James Boswell e Samuel Johnson.

“La vita di Johnson” scritta da Boswell rimane la biografia più famosa in qualsiasi lingua, uno dei più grandi successi della letteratura occidentale, senza precedenti nella sua profondità di ricerca e nel suo ampio uso di corrispondenza privata e conversazioni di cui Boswell prese appunti al momento e trasformandoli in un dettagliato ritratto realistico. Usando domande adulatorie e astute, Boswell indusse Johnson a dare il meglio di sé facendolo parlare di tutto.
Riuscì a elevare la vita del suo vecchio amico a statura epica e descrisse magistralmente i minimi dettagli della sua vita, anche grazie alla sua formazione giuridica e al tocco da giornalista esperto.
Senza sminuire la statura di Johnson, Boswell è ormai considerato non solo il fedele cronista di una personalità straordinaria, ma l’autore di un capolavoro.

“La vita” ha avuto una grande influenza sulle biografie successive e l’espressione “essere il Boswell di qualcuno” è stata usata per indicare un osservatore e cronista costante della vita di quella persona.

Il suo esempio più famoso è probabilmente in “A Scandal in Bohemia” di Arthur Conan Doyle (1891), in cui Sherlock Holmes dice affettuosamente del dottor Watson: “Sono perso senza il mio Boswell”.

Più tardi lo storico Thomas Macaulay (1800-1859) definì duella specie di culto di Boswell nei confronti del dottor Johnson “Lues Boswelliana”.
Nel suo “Saggi critici e storici: contributo alla revisione di Edimburgo” infatti scrisse:
“Biografi, traduttori, editori, insomma tutti, in breve, che si adoperano per illustrare la vita o gli scritti di altri, sono particolarmente esposti alla Lues Boswelliana, o malattia dell’ammirazione “

Considerava infatti tale tendenza del biografo a magnificare il suo soggetto una malattia, dal latino lues (“morbo, pestilkenza”).

Ho scoperto che il titolo di una biografia sul biografo James Boswell è “The Moth and the Candle / La falena e la candela” scritta da Iain Finlayson. Il titolo fa riferimento riferimento a una conversazione tra Boswell e Johnson:

“Lo stuzzicai con fantasiose ansie di infelicità. Dopo che una falena svolazzando intorno alla candela si bruciò, colse l’occasione di questo piccolo incidente per ammonirmi dicendo, con uno sguardo sornione e in tono solenne ma pacato: “Quella creatura era il suo stesso torturatore, e credo che il suo nome fosse Boswell”.
