The winter solstice marks the official beginning of astronomical winter.
It falls on 21 December in the Northern Hemisphere and in June in the Southern Hemisphere
It is the shortest day of the year, after which the days start getting longer.
However, for meteorologists and climatologists, the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere is on the 1st of December.
While the start of astronomical seasons can change a few days from year to year, but generally occurs around the 21st of the month, meteorological seasons always begin on the first day of December, March, June, and September.
In other words, while meteorologists divide the seasons according to weather rhythms on Earth and annual temperature cycles, astronomers look at space and the rotation of our planet around the Sun. It is the Earth’s tilted axis that causes the seasons, for example we have winter here, in the Northern Hemisphere, when the South Pole tilts toward the Sun.
❄️”If winter comes, can spring be far behind?”
— Percy Bysshe Shelley.
❄️“No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.”
— Hal Borland.
❄️“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”
— John Steinbeck.
❄️“The first snow is like the first love.”
—Lara Biyuts.
❄️“Kindness is like snow; it beautifies everything it covers.”
— Kahlil Gibran.
— Kahlil Gibran.

Strange isn’t it, that as the days start to get longer, they also get colder, as the depth of winter is still yet to come. The opposite happens in the summer as well.

All I can say to those quotes Luisa is there must be a whole bunch of kindness in our part of the world. Lots of snow and another 10 cm coming before Christmas. Allan

Wow. You are so lucky, as far as kindness is concerned, dear Allan.
Speaking of the snow I really hope it does not make circulation too difficult there!
