Tudor Gifts ♔

At the time of Henry VIII, on December 31st there were no celebrations for the last day of the year, because the beginning of the new year was celebrated on March 25th, ” Lady Day” or “the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin” ( celebrating the day when Mary was first told of the forthcoming birth of Jesus”) .
However, it was quite an important day for the courtiers, a day of preparation and waiting, because on January 1st there would be the exchange of gifts.

Back then Christmastide, the twelve days from Christmas to Epiphany, was beginning to resemble roughly the holiday season we know today, but gifts were exchanged, rather than on Christmas day, on January 1st, the day when courtiers traditionally gave their presents to the monarch.

Gift-giving took place mainly in the upper classes and had great political significance . It was a way to gain royal favour, to assert one’s status and show off one’s wealth by giving incredibly lavish gifts
Everyone was expected to give King Henry a gift on that day, which was recorded in a New Year’s Gift list.

After being presented with a gift, the King could show his pleasure or displeasure by accepting or rejecting it. If he returned a gift, he would demonstrate his generosity by ensuring the gift he gave was of more monetary value than the one received.

Tudor gifts varied a lot depending on the amount of money one had, or how close they were with the people they were exchanging with. Popular gifts included fabrics for making gowns, curtains, sashes, etc., saddles, jewels, linen shirts, spears, chalices, etc., all gifts with a purpose, which would rarely be wasted.

In 1532, for example, King Henry VIII accepted “an exotic set of richly decorated Pyrenean boar spears” as a gift from Anne Boleyn and gave her “a matching set of hangings for her room and bed, in cloth of gold, cloth of silver and richly embroidered crimson satin”.

On the same day he rejected the gold cup given him by his then-wife, Catherine of Aragon, from whom he was trying to divorce at the time.
The Imperial ambassador, wrote to the Emperor Charles V (Catherine’s nephew) about this “ gold cup of great value and singular workmanship” which the king “ not only refused to accept, but seemed at first very angry with the gentleman who had undertaken to bring it.”
However, some hours later the King asked to see the cup again, and ordered not to give it back until the evening, fearing that “the Queen might have it presented again before the courtiers (devant tout le monde), when he (the King) could not well refuse its acceptance”.

Anne Boleyn’s gift to Henry VIII two years later was King a silver gilt table fountain with rose water in a basin so that diners could rinse their hands, almost certainly designed by Holbein. The New Year’s Gift list describes it as “A goodly gilt bason, having a rail or board of gold in the midst of the brim, garnished with rubies and pearls, wherein standeth a fountain, also having a rail of gold about it garnished with diamonds, out whereof issueth water at the teats of three naked women standing about the foot of the same fountain.”

Ai tempi di Enrico VIII. il 31 dicembre non si facevano feste per l’ultimo giorno dell’anno, perché l’inizio del nuovo anno veniva celebrato il 25 marzo, “Festa della Madonna” o “Festa dell’Annunciazione della Beata Vergine” (che celebra il giorno in cui a Maria fu annunciata la nascita di Gesù).
Era però un giorno abbastanza importante per i cortigiani, un giorno di preparativi e di attese, perché il 1° gennaio ci sarebbe stato lo scambio dei doni.

A quei tempi il periodo natalizio, i dodici giorni da Natale all’Epifania, stava cominciando ad assomigliare grosso modo al periodo delle festività che oggi conosciamo, ma i regali venivano scambiati, anziché a Natale, il 1° gennaio, giorno in cui i cortigiani tradizionalmente porgevano i loro doni al monarca.

Lo scambio dei doni avveniva principalmente nelle classi più elevate e aveva un grande significato politico. Era un modo per ottenere il favore dei reali, per affermare il proprio status e mostrare la propria ricchezza facendo regali incredibilmente sontuosi.
Tutti dovevano fare un regalo a re Enrico in quel giorno, che veniva registrato in una lista dei regali di Capodanno.

Dopo aver ricevuto il dono, il re poteva mostrare il suo gradimento o la sua insoddisfazione accettandolo o rifiutandolo. Se avesse contraccambiato il regalo, avrebbe certamente dimostrato la sua generosità assicurandosi che il suo regalo avesse un valore superiore a quello ricevuto

I regali di quel periodo variavano parecchio a seconda della quantità di denaro che si possedeva o della vicinanza ai destinatari. I regali popolari includevano tessuti per fare abiti, tende, cinture, ecc., selle, gioielli, camicie di lino, lance, calici, ecc., tutti doni che avevano un’utilità e che raramente sarebbero stati sprecati.

Nel 1532, ad esempio, il re Enrico VIII accettò in dono da Anna Bolena “un insieme esotico di lance di cinghiale dei Pirenei riccamente decorate” e le diede “una serie di tendaggi coordinati per la sua stanza e il suo letto, in stoffa d’oro , stoffa d’argento e raso cremisi riccamente ricamato”.

Lo stesso giorno rifiutò la coppa d’oro regalatagli dall’allora moglie, Caterina d’Aragona, da cui in quel momento stava cercando di divorziare.
L’ambasciatore imperiale, scrisse all’imperatore Carlo V (nipote di Caterina) di questa “coppa d’oro di grande valore e singolare fattura” che il re “non solo rifiutò di accettare, ma sembrò in un primo momento molto arrabbiato con il gentiluomo che si era impegnato a portarla”.
Tuttavia, alcune ore dopo, il Re chiese di rivedere la coppa e ordinò di non restituirla fino a sera, temendo che “la Regina potesse presentargliela di nuovo di fronte ai cortigiani (devant tout le monde), quando lui (il Re) non poteva rifiutare di accettarla”.

Il regalo di Anna Bolena a Enrico VIII due anni dopo fu una fontana da tavolo in argento dorato con acqua di rose in una bacinella in modo che i commensali potessero sciacquarsi le mani, quasi certamente progettata da Holbein. La lista dei regali di Capodanno la descrive come “Un bacile dorato, avente una balaustra o bordo dorato nel contorno, guarnito di rubini e perle, in cui sta una fontana, con attorno un’altra balaustra d’oro guarnita di diamanti, dalla quale sgorga acqua dai capezzoli di tre donne nude che stanno ai piedi della stessa fontana”.
