“Those who can win a war well can rarely make a good peace, and those who could make a good peace would never have won the war.”
“Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter.”
“The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events.”
“Dictators ride to and fro on tigers from which they dare not dismount. And the tigers are getting hungry.”

Luisa, I love the calm, rational way you are denouncing the war against the Ukraine by pitting the brilliant against the demented. God bless you and the millions of Ukrainians affected by this devastating turmoil. Lorraine

Churchill of course was a great leader during the time of war, but wasn’t a great leader in peacetime. That still doesn’t mean that it is right, as some people would like to see, his statue in Parliament Square taken down.

I feel we judge Winnie by current standards rather than the standards of his time. We do the same in the states.

You’re absolutely right Pat. To be honest he wan’t a man for the working class but he was the man we needed to win a war against an attack on liberty

I’m afraid there are people out there who want to re-write history to fit their own agenda Luisa. When they deface his statue they forget that he had a large part to play in giving them the freedom to even think about it.

I have some quotes from him too for you: “I cannot understand this squeamishness about the use of gas” Winston Churchill. “I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes,” Winston Churchill. And on Gandhi “[He] should not be released on the account of a mere threat of fasting,” “We should be rid of a bad man and an enemy of the Empire if he died.” Uh…I do say, this man who had a clear plan drawn up to drop hundreds of atom bombs on the innocent civilians of Soviet Union and who was partly responsible for the needlessly punishing and unbelievably cruel bombing of Dresden where so many innocent civilians lost their lives is now your anti-war hero? How shameful is that? What about Bengal? And 3 million people who died from starvation in his territory?

This is very interesting because this post was published on my birthday and I found the choice about Churchill curious because it is the name of my dearest friend’s Bulldog, a special being who saved her daughter’s life. It’s not about animals or humans, but souls who knew and fulfilled their purpose.
