Today is the birthday of Tom Lehrer, who was born on 9 April 1928.
He is an American singer-songwriter, satirist, pianist and mathematician, best known for his short humorous songs recorded in the 1950s and 1960s.
In the early 1970s, he largely retired from public performances to devote his time to teaching mathematics and musical theatre history at the University of California, Santa Cruz, occasionally performing songs in his lectures.
In his 1953 song “When You Are Old And Gray”, whose title recalls Yeats’ “When You Are Old (and grey and full of sleep)” – see here – , he overturns a common song theme, that is the traditional promise of a long love life as the couple ages gracefully together.
The singer expresses the need to enjoy their love because, as he cynically points out, it will soon fade, as will their youth and their pleasant appearance, and enumerates the reasons why their relationship, over the years, is destined to collapse.
“When You Are Old And Gray”
Since I still appreciate you,
Let’s find love while we may.
Because I know I’ll hate you
When you are old and grey.
So say you love me here and now,
I’ll make the most of that.
Say you love and trust me,
For I know you’ll disgust me
When you’re old and getting fat.
An awful debility,
A lessened utility,
A loss of mobility
Is a strong possibility.
In all probability
I’ll lose my virility
And you your fertility
And desirability,
And this liability
Of total sterility
Will lead to hostility
And a sense of futility,
So let’s act with agility
While we still have facility,
For we’ll soon reach senility
And lose the ability.
Your teeth will start to go, dear,
Your waist will start to spread.
In twenty years or so, dear,
I’ll wish that you were dead.
I’ll never love you then at all
The way I do today.
So please remember,
When I leave in December,
I told you so in May.
Perché so che ti odierò
quando sarai vecchia e grigia.
Quindi dimmi che mi ami qui e ora,
ne trarrò il massimo.
di’ che mi ami e ti fidi di me,
perché so che mi disgusterai
quando sarai vecchia e grassa.
Una terribile debilità,
una ridotta utilità,
una perdita di mobilità
è una forte possibilità.
Con ogni probabilità
perderò la mia virilità
e tu la tua fertilità
e desiderabilità,
e questa responsabilità
di totale sterilità
condurrà all’ostilità
e un senso di futilità,
quindi agiamo con velocità
mentre ancora ne abbiamo la capacità,
perché presto raggiungeremo la senilità
e perderemo ogni abilità.
I tuoi denti inizieranno a cadere, mia cara,
e il tuo giro-vita inizierà ad allargarsi.
Tra vent’anni o giù di lì, mia cara,
magari vorrò vederti morta.
Allora non ti amerò più
come faccio oggi.
Quindi per favore ricorda
che quando me ne andrò a dicembre,
te l’avevo già detto a maggio.

If it weren’t for your blog, I would still be unaware of so many characters that mark an era in the entire world of literature. The poem is a harsh reality written in a direct and unadorned way. Life goes on and we get closer and closer to that end that has no turning back. I have enjoyed reading your post. A weekend of the best for you my dear Luisa.

This may be the most comical, I’ll dump you when your older songs I have ever read. The lyrics make as much fun of him as it does of her. Usually finger pointing only goes in one direction. of course, as a man, he assumes he will still be considered attractive, for his probable wealth or position, if no longer for his good looks, charm, and personality.

You’re right, men of a certain age still consider themselves attractive, for a variety of reasons. Even films and advertising promote male faces in which wrinkles are a sign of life lived fully or wisdom, while in women wrinkles are ugly defects to try to disguise

I love the lyrics. He is so direct with his message. He makes ne wonder whether there’s really true love when one grows old.
He says: “For I know you’ll disgust me
When you’re old and getting fat.” 😢😄

Yes, there is still love as you get older. It is no longer passion but a complex sentiment, a set of different feelings

That makes sense. 👌 Made me think that as people grow old they grow apart, haha

Buona serata a te 💙❤️💙
