Bono and the Snakes ๐Ÿ

On the occasion of St. Patrickโ€™s Day, 17 March, House speaker Nancy Pelosi hosted the usual Friends of Ireland luncheon at the White House during which she read a poem written by U2 frontman Bono.
Bono has an annual tradition of sending her a limerick for the luncheon.
โ€œThis year the limerick is irregular and not funny at all,โ€ he wrote on Twitter โ€œWe stand with the people of Ukraine and their leader.โ€

The poem is an extended limerick that encompassed both Irish mythology and the crisis in Ukraine, where Bono uses the legend of St Patrick banishing snakes from Ireland as a metaphor for President Volodymyr Zelenskyโ€™ s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was active as a missionary during the fifth century. According to one of the legends associated with him, he expelled all snakes from Ireland ordering then to slither away into the sea, after a 40-day fast he was undertaking on top of a hill.

Here is the poem:

Oh, St Patrick he drove out the snakes
With his prayers but thatโ€™s not all it takes
For the snake symbolises
An evil that rises
And hides in your heart, as it breaks

And the evil has risen my friends
From the darkness that lives in some men
But in sorrow and fear
Thatโ€™s when saints can appear
To drive out those old snakes once again

And they struggle for us to be free
From the psycho in this human family
Irelandโ€™s sorrow and pain
Is now the Ukraine
And St Patrickโ€™s name now Zelensky

๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ

Final note:

In Irish Christian Irish folklore, the legend of St Patrick is the “reason” why Ireland is completely snake-free in nature. Naturalists claim that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes as no signs of them have been found in the country’s fossil record.
The myth may be an allegory of St. Patrick’s mission of conversion to Christianity: the snakes of Ireland can be views as the pagans of Irelandโ€™s Celtic history and his โ€œbanishment of snakesโ€ may in truth be a simple metaphor for the chasing/ evangelization of the pagans.

San Patrizio cacciรฒ via i serpenti

Ciao cara Luisa, buon proseguire!๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿฅฐ

Oggigiorno l’unico rettile nativo dell’isola รจ la lucertola comune.

  4. Luisa ! As St. Patrick drove all the snakes from Ireland ordering them to slither away in the sea so that people of Ireland could be saved . We also have a legend in India how Lord Krishna controlled a snake of numerous hoods to save the humanity as such about five thousand years ago . But what is urgently needed today is an incarnation of a huge man who could keep the world in order and together , who could make this small but beautiful world understand the meaning of peace and tranquility , who could make the world understand the meaning of peaceful coexistence . What the world urgently requires is a supra-rational man like — LORD BUDDHA , MAHATMA GANDHI , JESUS CHRIST as such . And I personally feel and think that your precious blogs would one day pave the way for such a Godlike supra-human being to come down from the Heaven directly to save the mankind as such . Thanks !

  6. You always teach me something in your posts, Luisa. This time I learned that Pelosi reads a Bono limerick at the St. Patrick’s luncheon. I knew the story of St. Patrick and the snakes, but it’s a fresh way to look at snakes and Putin.
