Stevie Wonder’s Sunshine ☀️🎶

Today is Stevie Wonder’s birthday: American singer-songwriter and musician Stevland Hardaway Morris was born on 13 May 1950 in Michigan.
He became blind shortly after his birth, because, having been born six weeks premature, he was placed in an incubator which contained too much oxygen , resulting in Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), an eye disorder caused by the presence of abnormal blood vessels throughout the retina.
Even as a child, however, Stevie never let his vision disorder hold him back. At the age of five, he told his mother: “Don’t worry about me being blind, because I’m happy”, a statement he also confirmed to Oprah in 2004.
He taught himself how to play the piano, harmonica, and drums, becoming a child prodigy who signed a contract with Motown Records at the age of 11, where he was given the professional name of Little Stevie Wonder. (see here)

“You Are the Sunshine of My Life” is a 1973 single which in the same year earned him the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

When Wonder wrote this song, “the sunshine of his life”, the one who brightened up his world and made him feel happy, was his (then) wife Syreeta Wright, who became a singer and songwriter by her own. The marriage was not a success but their musical collaboration was and Syreeta wrote lyrics to many of Wonder’s songs during the next few years.
Married in 1970, they divorced after only eighteen months in the summer of 1972, before the song became a hit.

In this song Stevie describes how the woman in his life makes him feel, which is why he will “always stay around”. Even though their marriage didn’t work, but the feeling was real and the song remains a heartfelt expression of everlasting love.

You Are the Sunshine of My Life

You are the sunshine of my life
That’s why I’ll always be around
You are the apple of my eye
Forever you’ll stay in my heart
I feel like this is the beginning

Though I’ve loved you for a million years
And if I thought our love was ending
I’d find myself drowning in my own tears

You are the sunshine of my life
That’s why I’ll always stay around
You are the apple of my eye
Forever you’ll stay in my heart

You must have known that I was lonely
Because you came to my rescue
And I know that this must be heaven
How could so much love be inside of you?

You are the sunshine of my life, yeah
That’s why I’ll always stay around
You are the apple of my eye
Forever you’ll stay in my heart

Love has joined us
Love has joined us
Let’s think sweet love

perché sei venuta in mio soccorso

  1. Notre amitié est précieuse
    Car elle me rend heureux
    Tu es mon meilleur(e) ami(e)
    Car tu es ici
    Tu m’as tendu la main
    Par tes écris tes mots
    Tu as renversé mon destin
A toi mon ami(e) belle journée bise

    1. Luisa ! This perception is absolutely wrong that blind man can do things blindly . Stevie Wonder has proved that . He proved to be an excellent singer . ‘Don’t worry about me being blind , because I’m happy .’ He said to his mother at the age of five . Since he was happy , the divorce from his wife couldn’t change his way . We in India had SURDAS who was blind from the birth but he was an ardent devotee of LORD KRISHNA and he was a devotional poet and singer who wrote his magnum opus called SUR SAGAR in the 16th century AD and his songs are still sung even today by the devotees of LORD KRISHNA the world over . So the most important thing in this mortal world is whether you are happy or not . That is the essence of life . And your blogs certainly make us happy . Thanks .

      1. I thank you very much for this wonderful comment and your thoughts on happiness. I also thank you for talking about the blind poet Surdas, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna 🙏💙🙏

  2. Thank you, Luisa! Which of us, his generation, can forget the hope and encouragement, optimism and commitment of this song?
This may be one of those mirror-measuring stick-heart-held, milestone songs of the lives of some of us? Sarah

  4. Non conoscevo questa canzone. Di Stevie Wonder ricordo molto bene Is she lovely che ha accompagnato la mia adolescenza e quella di tutti i miei amici di allora. Grazie Luisa e buon fine settimana

  6. The ’70s were the years when romance blossomed in our youth and music was an inherent part of our lives. This song was the declaration of total love where he screams for her to never leave. We identified with the lyrics of this song because it made us daydream. Nostalgia arrives with its chronicle on Stevie Wonder, a great singer of all time.

    1. I agree with you: the beautiful songs of those times, those of our youth, bring with them joy but also a deep nostalgia
(A question often arises to me: why have all these years passed so quickly? Where did they go? This song seems to belong to yesterday, or a few days before)

      1. When something disturbs our daily routine, like the emotion of a song that only lasts a few minutes, it leads us to that nostalgia that tells part of our past life. I think that the mind makes us perceive that it was yesterday when the moments were memorable. Although a year always has the same duration, the relationship between how long one lasts and the time we have lived is getting smaller and smaller. Life things

  7. Grande autore e grande canzone!

  10. He was one of my favorite musicians, even as a kid! I had a very small LP collection when I was about 8 years old, and his Songs in the Key of Life was part of it! He is truly an inspiration. Thanks for sharing this, Luisa! Have a lovely week ahead! 🌞
