I have already published some posts about this song, but in this period in which I am focusing on the theme of silence I would like to propose it again. Here silence is not something solemn and celestial in which to find refuge and inspiration, but only the result of the lack of communication among people.
“The Sound of Silence” was written by Paul Simon over a period of six months in 1963 and 1964 and included in Simon & Garfunkel’s album, “Morning, 3 AM”.
The Sound of Silence
Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
“Fools” said I, “You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said “The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence”
“The Sound of Silence” is an oxymoron (i.e. the combination of words having opposite or very different meanings) that skilfully underlines the concept of incommunicability among people.
The song can be interpreted as a bitter satire towards the materialism: people live in darkness, in the void and pursue only material well-being, and they have forgotten the real meaning and value of life. We are lonely people, who focus on worthless things and only listen to or watch trivial things which prevent us from realising the emptiness or alienation of our lives. We have become unable to communicate deeply, as communication occurs only on a superficial and “commercial” level .
Consumerism, materialism, mass media, have taken the lead of our thoughts and desires, directing our choices, necessities and goals. Now our attention is only attracted by the Neon signs, by the neon God we have created and worship blindly.
In such a society, lacking spirituality and true meaning of life, there is no serious understanding because there is no serious communication. No one dares take the risk of reaching out to disturb the sound of silence, because when meaningful communication fails, the only sound is silence.
gente sentiva senza ascoltare
gente che scriveva canzoni che nessuna voci avrebbe mai cantato
e nessuno osava,

‘ The Sound of Silence ‘ by Paul Simon skillfully underlines the prevailing incommunicability among the people due to the deepening effects of over consumerism , materialism and mass media on the people as such . These are virtually side effects of cultural annihilation which has silenced the neurons of the mind of common man . His mind is full of unwanted thoughts and blind worship which doesn’t have an iota of spirituality at all . In such a society where we lack in true spirituality and true meaning of life , serious communication among people is lacking considerably . So no body is ready to break the sound of the silence . The title of the poem appears to oxymoron but true to the considerable extent . Thanks Luisa !

And the anger that is roiling through your brain
Still remains

The song broke new ground in many ways – it was one of the first songs to use full orchestration as accompaniment instead of drums, bass or other instruments. It also marked an important shift in music style that became known as folk rock – one that came to dominate American music throughout much of the decade. The most important way it broke ground though, was by helping people begin to confront their inner fears and anxieties over living through a tumultuous time like post-war America; and how scary change can be even when it’s forced upon us. This is what makes Sound of Silence such a powerful song today. The times may have changed, but fear hasn’t. And while we’re never going back to those days where no one dared disturb the sound, we still need music like Sound of Silence now more than ever. That’s why it remains so popular among fans young and old today, almost six decades after its release.

Magnifica canzone, 👍.

Grazie a te, ☺️.

♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

A great song and a great interpretation of it Luisa. May I add to that, by saying that we’re living in a world of the silent majority being afraid to speak in fear of being scorned, or worse. ‘Empty vessels make the most noise’ is a saying that is still very true today. Some people think that they can win an argument by shouting the loudest.

NON VEDO L’ORA
( Il silenzio no!)
suonare or compassata sinfonia
oppur poema epico e profondo,

I always liked the version of “Sounds of Silence” from the eponymous LP in January 1966. It seems strange that the year 1966 started with this contemplative, almost innocent song. At that time there was a conventional war in Vietnam, which no one could understand anymore, but which was only a partial aspect of a much larger conflict of the systems, which had not only competed in space, but also in both earthly hemispheres struggled for supremacy.

Many believe that the song commented on the assassination of John F. Kennedy, as Simon had begun writing it in November 1963, the month Kennedy was assassinated, even though the artist stated in an interview that he had written it when he was 21 years old, in his bathroom, where he turned off the lights to better concentrate
Thanks a lot for your great reflections!!!

It does seem, Luisa, that the sound of North American silence has grown louder and louder since the mid-1960s.
People are afraid to communicate because of the violence which rides under and often at the surface of our society. Everyone wants to avoid confrontation at all costs. Trump did not help. Nor physically attacking the Congress of the US. Nor Covid isolation. Nor increasing disparities of wealth, health ad opportunity among us. Nor a long list of this and that.
There are many ways of association, however, which have existed and been expanded here since the time of de Tocqueville. Some of the under-30s use inclusive language and behaviours as if they had learned these with their mothers’ milk.
All this helps to counter the silence, I suppose. I have hope for this even if I understand that , until such time as our economic and international financial systems have been modified and their wealth moved more and more towards social justice, the silence will persist.
Am I misremembering or did the silence finally fall between Simon and Garfunkel also?
Sarah

o no a questo vivere così,
diciamo “alla giornata” or che hai
passati i 60 anni, ed ogni dì
potrebbe essere l’ultimo. Lo sai
che gli altri puoi ingannare col sorriso
col gioviale tuo modo di fare,
allegro, serioso e assai preciso
come se ti dovessi aspettare
ancora tanti soli e tante lune.
Ignorano che stai a soppesare
puranco le parole or che la fune
al massimo è tirata, e vuoi lasciare
gradevole ricordo, assaporare
l’ultimo sole, l’ultima aurora,
l’ultima stretta sincera di mano,
e l’ultima parola “ancora… ancora!”
