William Ellery Channing (who was born on 10 June 1818 and died in1901) was an American transcendentalist poet and nephew of the Unitarian preacher Dr. William Ellery Channing (see here)
He was one of the youngest and most active contributors to the transcendentalist magazine “The Dial”, in which he published about sixty poems and prose articles, more than any other writer.
He married Ellen Fuller, the younger sister of Margaret Fuller (see here).
While Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau appreciated his works, Edgar Allan Poe’s reviews were particularly harsh in a series of articles titled “Our Amateur Poets”, in which he wrote, “It may be said in his favor that nobody ever heard of him. Like an honest woman, he has always succeeded in keeping himself from being made the subject of gossip”.
Here is a quote from one of his poem reported in the tenth edition of “Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations”. This is i the most widespread collection of American quotations, first issued in 1855 and currently in its eighteenth edition.
“Most joyful let the Poet be;
It is through him that all men see.“
Another fascinating peek at a previousLY unknown poet, dear Luisa. I absolutely adore these words ‘While Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau appreciated his works, Edgar Allan Poe’s reviews were particularly harsh in a series of articles titled “Our Amateur Poets”, in which he wrote, “It may be said in his favor that nobody ever heard of him. Like an honest woman, he has always succeeded in keeping himself from being made the subject of gossip”.” I am developing an increasing fondness for Poe. You can’t have poetry with out Poe.

Edgar Allen Poe was nothing, if not direct. Not sure why he would single out an “unknown poet” for his scorn, unless, of course, he feared that Channing was becoming known. Thanks for sharing Luisa. Allan

Edgar Allan Poe, who made his living as a book reviewer and magazine writer, was notorious for being a harsh critic: he was nicknamed the “Tomahawk Man.” 😉
Thanks a lot for your reflection 🙏

Luisa ! Your blog regarding William Ellery Channing who was an American Tanscedentalist poet and about whom Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau had words of appreciation , but to Edgar Allan Poe who wrote about him in a review article of his poetries , ‘ It may be said in his favour that nobody ever heard of him . Like an honest woman , he was always succeeded in keeping himself from being made the subject of gossip . ‘ Such sarcastic comments , however , showed that his transcendental poetry remain a subject matter of gossip despite the fact that as a mam/poet he was not widely known as such . Transcendentalism , itself , is an area of studies which attracts very less people because there is nothing worldly as such in it . People attracts generally towards worldly things keeping aside all such things of transcendentalism as such . Luisa ! You always bring to us all a blog on such people/poet/writer/ author about whom we have a very little knowledge or frankly telling no knowledge at all . But we all , specifically I , like that honest woman always comes on the front so that gossip about We/I should always be on . After all it is a great post in all respects . Thanks !

Interesting, poe had quite a few critics in his day, must’ve been common practice to poo poo on other poets in his day.

uno che usa versi a non finire
per cantare sempre, all’infinito,
. . quindi . . . lei lo sa?”
— “La prego, non mi metta in imbarazzo.
Lo so perfettamente! . . . In verità
. . . è uno che in casa non fa un cazzo!”
(Cassandro)
