Serenity Prayer

Reinhold Niebuhr (born on 21 June 1892) was an American theologian famous for his studies on the possibility of relating the Christian faith to the realities of modern politics and diplomacy.

In his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” Martin Luther King Jr., who claimed he had been more influenced by Niebuhr’s social and ethical ideals than by Gandhi, wrote, “Individuals may see the moral light and voluntarily give up their unjust posture; but, as Reinhold Niebuhr has reminded us, groups tend to be more immoral than individuals”.

Aside from his political commentary, Niebuhr is also known for having composed the Serenity Prayer, probably in 1932 as there is a recorded reference to it in a diary entry from one of his pupils and collaborators.
The prayer spread rapidly, often without attribution to Niebuhr, through church groups in the 1930s and 1940s and it was circulated on printed cards among soldiers during World War II.
Niebuhr used it in sermons and first published it in 1951 in a magazine column.
The earliest versions of the prayer had no title, but in 1955 it was called the Serenity Prayer in publications of Alcoholics Anonymous, becoming a favourite amongst this group, so much so that it was known as the “AA Prayer”.
Niebuhr never copyrighted the prayer, which has been used in many variants and also attributed to a variety of other authors, including St. Francis of Assisi, Thomas Aquinas, Cicero, St. Augustine, Boethius, Marcus Aurelius, , or Thomas More

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it.
Trusting that He will make all things right, if I surrender to His will.
That I may be reasonably happy in this life,
and supremely happy with Him forever in the next.”

In the first (and most famous) stanza, there is a three-fold request to God for serenity, courage and wisdom and in the second stanza the prayer asks for contentment in day-to-day life and acceptance of hardships and expresses trust in God who will bring peace and happiness.

Nella “Lettera dal carcere di Birmingham” Martin Luther King Jr. , che affermava di essere stato più influenzato dagli ideali sociali ed etici di Niebuhr che da Gandhi, scrisse: “Gli individui possono vedere la luce morale e rinunciare volontariamente alla loro posizione ingiusta; ma, come ci ha ricordato Reinhold Niebuhr, i gruppi tendono ad essere più immorali degli individui“

Niebuhr è anche noto anche per aver composto la Preghiera della serenità, probabilmente nel 1932 poiché vi è un riferimento ad essa nel diario di uno dei suoi allievi e collaboratori.
La preghiera si diffuse rapidamente, spesso senza essere attribuita a Niebuhr, in vari gruppi ecclesiastici negli anni ’30 e ’40 e fu fatta circolare su cartoncini tra i soldati durante la seconda guerra mondiale.
Niebuhr la usò nei sermoni e la pubblicò per la prima volta nel 1951 nella rubrica di una rivista.
Le prime versioni della preghiera non avevano alcun titolo, ma nel 1955 venne chiamata: Preghiera della serenità nelle pubblicazioni degli Alcolisti Anonimi , diventando una delle invocazioni preferite in questo gruppo, tanto da essere conosciuta come “Preghiera degli AA”.
Niebuhr non protesse mai la preghiera con copyright , per cui è stata utilizzata in molte varianti e anche attribuita a una varietà di altri autori, tra cui San Francesco d’Assisi, Tommaso d’Aquino, Cicerone, Sant’Agostino, Boezio, Marco Aurelio o Tommaso Moro

“Dio, concedimi la serenità di accettare le cose che non posso cambiare,
il coraggio di cambiare le cose che posso cambiare,
e la saggezza di conoscerne la differenza.

Vivendo un giorno alla volta;
assaporando un momento alla volta;
accettando la avversità come via per la pace.
Prendendo, come Egli ha fatto, questo mondo di peccato com’è, non come lo vorrei io.
Confidando che Egli sistemerà le cose, se io mi arrenderò alla Sua volontà.
Che io possa essere ragionevolmente felice in questa vita,
e immensamente felice con Lui per sempre nella prossima.”

Nella prima e più famosa strofa c’è una triplice richiesta a Dio per ottenere serenità, coraggio e saggezza e nella seconda strofa la preghiera domanda appagamento nella vita quotidiana, accettazione delle difficoltà ed esprime fiducia in Dio che porterà pace e felicità.
