“Black-eyed Susan” and “Sweet William” are not only the protagonists of Gay’s ballad, but the also the names given to two flowering plants.
It is said if they are sown together, they will bloom at the same time to celebrate their eternal love for each other. And they look lovely together, combining her golden yellow and his bright red and purple.
“Black-eyed Susan” (Rudbeckia hirta) is a wildflower that grows throughout the United States and Canada. The name, Black-eyed Susan, was given to the plant by early British settlers when they arrived in the new World and saw those beautiful golden daisy-like flowers with dark centres. It was a plant that Native Americans knew well and used as a botanical medicine, for example as an external wash or poultice for snake bites and open wounds. Employed as an infusion it treated colds and parasitic worms, and as a tincture it was useful for earaches. Its root parts have also been shown to have immunostimulatory activity similar to Echinacea purpurea, able to boost immunity and fight colds, flu and infections.
Loved by photographers and artists, this flower was immortalized by Louis Comfort Tiffany in his famous table lamp whose lampshade is named Black-eyed Susan Flower.
“Sweet William” (Dianthus barbatus) is another flowering plant native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. and later introduced to North America.
Wild plants produce red flowers with a white base, but the colours in cultivars range from white to intense red and purple, and are sometimes bicolor, with the centre in a contrasting hue. The flowers may have medicinal properties and attract bees, birds, and butterflies.
At the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011, Kate included Sweet William in her bouquet, as a tribute to her bridegroom.
In conclusion, if we have “Sweet William” and “Black-Eyed Susan” in our gardens, we have a love story playing out right before our eyes every time these lowers bloom together!

Luisa ! You have again provided us bio-literary information about a set of flowers : ‘ Black-Eyed Susan ‘ ( Rudbekia hirta ) and ‘ Sweet Williams ‘ ( Dianathus barbatus ) . The first is female , I think , and the second is male . And they almost grow at a same place and everytime bloom together . They are symbol of love and harmony . They are , though , not human beings . So question of divorce never arises between them . That’s why ideal . That’s why they became parts of Gay’s Ballad in human form supposing that they will live together , love together bloom together . Thanks Luisa for such literary information .

Sweet William was a plant that I often saw when I was growing up, but not Black-Eyed Susan. Today, I see more Black-Eyed Susan than I do Sweet William.

FILEMONE E BAUCI
( Lui)
— “Col tempo muor qualunque grande amore,
salvo che prima muoiano gli amanti;
se questi a lungo vivono il fiore
che un dì fiorì va giù . .
perdono forza e plana lentamente.
Per questo mi accontento anche del poco
che oggi ho, perchè forse domani
potrebbe ardere meno il nostro fuoco
e meno riscaldar le nostre mani.
Ciò che ignoriamo è sol quando cadrà
tutto l’amore nostro nelle fauci
del tempo . . . No, in noi non rivivrà
la storia di Filemone e di Bauci”.
° ° °
(Lei)
— “D’accordo, ma non farne una tragedia,
non ti fasciar la testa prima di
cascare a capofitto dalla sedia
. . . No, non mi accontento
invece io . . . No, io voglio tutto
ciò che si può . .
