Herbert Hoover and Youth

Herbert Clark Hoover (10 August 1874 –1964)  – American politician and engineer who served as the 31st president of the United States from 1929 to 1933

“Older men declare war. But it is youth that must fight and die. And it is youth who must inherit the tribulation, the sorrow and the triumphs that are the aftermath of war.”

Blessed are the young for they shall inherit the national debt.”

    2. Luisa ! Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States of America from 1929 to 1933 , the period of the Great Depression . He was from the Republican Party . So , he staunchly opposed any intervention from the federal government in the U.S. economy. And he was defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1932 Presidential Election . And he rightly said , ‘ Blessed are the youth for they shall inherit the national debt .’ And ‘ Older men declare war . But it is the youth that must fight and die …..’ The Great Depression that was later on won over by the US President Franklin D. Roosevelt through his policiels call ‘New Deal’. Thanks Luisa for reminding us about the US President Herbert Hoover .

  2. What a wonderful quote by Herbert Clark Hoover on the aftermath of a war announced by greedy, power hungry, aged politicians who are willing to sacrifice the youngsters life for their own welfare! 3. Però…????

    F I A M M I F E R O

Quasi tutti color con cui mi scontro
vivranno un mondo che io non vivrò,
    qualunque giovane mi viene incontro
mi dice “io ci sarò e tu . . . tu no,

non ci sarai tu, tu l’hai avuta
di già la parte tua della vita,
la gioia tu già l’hai conosciuta
ed or ti spetta la grande dormita”.

E chi può dargli torto? . . .

    fa luce mentre brucia lentamente,
fa caldo come può, ma come intende
chiunque appena spento non è niente.

    Una volta soltanto resta acceso
sia per il mendicante che per Creso.

  4. On the surface these are two thoughtful quotes…on the surface.
His quote on young men and war tempered the rising outrage in the US against the Fascism that was taking over governments in Italy, Germany, Spain.
This quote certainly represents his Quaker religion…Pacifism and Humanitarianism, both of which he strongly followed his entire life, along with his devotion to Conservatism. Turn the other cheek and don’t rock the boat. Let the rich get rich and the poor get poorer.
His GOP party believed that Fascism was rooted in Capitalism and was needed against the rise of Communism. Hoover may have spoken out against war per- se, but not against the wars in the US against unions, civil rights, Blacks, Jews, Native Americans.
His quote about the national debt was his excuse for doing nothing to help Americans during the Depression, a Depression brought about by the outrageous policies that were allowed in the Stock Markets.
The National Debt could have had tax contributions from the legal sale of liquor instead the Prohibition during Hoover’s term didn’t stop liquor dealings, the liquor business grew when it was illegal and spawned the growth of the gangsters and Mafia in the US. But liquor is against his religion.
He beat out Al Smith, the first Catholic to run for president, and a proven champion of the common man,. The strong points he used against Smith was he would be influenced too much by his religion, especially the Pope. This came at a time when Catholicism under this Pope was a strong backing for European Fascism. It wasn’t his religion Hoover and the GOP feared. It was Smith’s radical ideas that would help all Americans and curb the robber barons.

    Ci odieranno a vita.
