➡️ Part 1
Amy Lyon, who was to become Admiral Nelson’s mistress, had a quite remarkable past.
While she was a girl, in London, she worked for some time in the Pall Mall “Temple of Health and Hymen”, where she played the part of a sexy young goddess. It was run by the Scottish doctor James Graham, who had picked her up on the streets near his clinic.
The most prominent feature in Graham’s lavish clinic was his “Electro-Magnetic Musical Grand State Celestial Bed”, on which “perfect babies could be created”.
It ensured increased sexual pleasure and fertility through a series of electrical pulses and intoxicating aromas at the cost of £50 per session and it became one of the most fashionable destinations for the aristocracy of the day.
It was based on the theory that engaging in sex surrounded by a gentle field of electricity could not only enhance sexual performance and pleasure, but also aid fertility.
Graham’s pamphlet said that the magnets provided “irresistibly powerful tides of the magnetic effluvium’ creating ‘that sweet undulating, titillating, vibratory, soul-dissolving, marrow-melting motion which is at once so necessary and so pleasing”.
The bed rested on “forty pillars of brilliant glass” and a tilting inner frame to put couples in the best position to conceive, and their movements set off music from organ pipes which emitted “celestial sounds”, whose intensity increased with the ardour of the occupants of the bed.
At the head of the bed, there was a moving clockwork tableau celebrating Hymen, the god of marriage, and the words “Be fruitful, multiply and replenish the earth!“, formed of some conductive material so that they crackled and sparkled with energy.
All was inside a dome that also contained a cage full of cooing turtle doves.
Interviewed by The Gentleman’s Magazine, Graham praised his “chaise d’amour/ love chair” as follows:
“The influence of the electrical fire warms and invigorates the whole system, exciting and exalting the amorous ideas of both sexes, stimulating them to the enjoyment of love, and greatly heightening and prolonging its sweet pleasures.”
Acidic commentators like Horace Walpole called James Graham a quack.
But James Graham was much more than a quack, able to use scientific advances to great visual effect. At the time his bed embodied science, medical theory and cutting edge technology.
For some time the Temple of Health was a great success and became the subject of satirical plays, poems, and prints.
This electric sex bed was immortalized by the Yorkshire poet William Mason who wrote:
… thither haste with knocking knees;
Genial and prolific fires,
Shall wake your pulse to new desires;
Tho’ your embers should be dead,
Stretch on his celestial bed;
Soon you’ll feel the vital flame,
Rushing thro’ your icey frame!
To be continued
… Fuochi geniali e prolifici,
risveglieranno il vostro impulso a nuovi desideri;
anche se le vostre braci fossero morte,
stendetevi sul letto celeste;
presto sentirete la fiamma vitale,
che corre attraverso il vostro corpo ghiacciato!

Inventive and industrious showmanship at least, although not entirely original. It was something of a fad in those days to promote licentious erotic activities under the guise of health practices. Physicians notoriously treated female patients for ‘hysteria’ with ‘happy ending’ ‘therapeutic’ massages. Spas were established for the purpose of administering enemas, attended by ‘clinicians’ of the opposite sex. And so on. It was quite a nod-and-wink industry.

Luisa ! You have provided us all very nice and palatable information . The story of of Amy Lyon , a Sexy Young Goddess , and the ‘ Temple of Health and Hyman ‘ are very interesting . Graham’s clinic featured ‘ Electro-Magnetic Musical Grand State Celestial Bed ‘ on which ‘Perfect Baby Could Be Crated’. I think by such scientific and serious efforts of Graham , the English men started breeding perfect children and in enormous number , and by now (1st October 2022) its population reached 68,685,322 . For such experiments of Graham and the Sexy Young Goddess , Amy Lyon , the Gentleman Magazine praised their efforts in nice words . However , Acidic Commentator like Horace Walpole called James Graham a quack . But the Yorkshire poet William Mason immortalized Graham’s Electronic Sex Bed . Immense thanks for sharing such a fertile story of Lady Amy Lyon .

Excellent, dear Luisa. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it, despite my hatred for sex. I had very bad experience with men trying to make sexual advances and I successfully avoided them, losing virginity only to my husband. I am so sorry. Should not have inserted personal feelings but got carried away.

. . . ascolta, ma non so se capirai
perché io scrivo un poco criptato
per non finire subito impalato.
La vita si ripete e non sperare
che la lezione si stia ad imparare:
si ripeteranno beghe e torti,
risate, lotte e sfide, lutti e morti.
E’ guerra pure il tiro alla quaglia!
Sempre la stessa inoltre questa è
ovunque si combatta la battaglia,
in campo aperto . . . o su un canapè
(usando armi di morte e no fioretto
. . . ben spesso preceduta da congiure . . .
o rotolando su morbido letto
fra risatine, baci e arcipremure).
Solo che della prima è ignoto
fino alla fine chi è il vincitore,
sul letto invece no . .
numeri sono tutti, uomini no . . .
qui è . . . uno ad una, e sol gli stolti
credono che anche lei perdere può.
Pensa a Mata-Hari, oppure alla Contessa
di Castiglione, Virgi Oldoini,
alla Pimpaccia, e a chi per essa
morì, sì, Papa . . . ma senza quattrini.
Tiene la donna, infatti, mille volti
. . . da occhi chiusi a boccuccia aperta . . .
. . . potere . . . soldi . . . e che lei fa
giammai perché lo scelga da se stessa,
ma sol perché così ‘qualcuno’ vuole
. . . tu pensa al Cardinale Mazzarino,
nei confronti allora del Re Sole,
allo stesso Cavour, che tal giochino
— che ripeteva ogni momentino —
usò per alleanze . . . insomma, in uno,
in quanto furbo come orso bruno
per lei sbrodolerà, bella di gesso.
Sono una cosa i fatti della Storia
perciò, ed altra i fatti di letto:
i primi tieni sempre in memoria
. . . al punto che ben vengono osannate
codeste belle donne, amico mio,
più studio, eh sì, e più riconosco
che qui non posso far l’intransigente.
La Storia non facciamo, la subiamo,
siamo pedine in grande scacchiera,
altri fanno le mosse e noi andiamo
spesso dove un bacio nella sera
— da chi è bionda mesciata, rossa o nera —
ci porta, o un abbraccio sul divano,
se non piedino ardito sotto il tavolo!
Così, le porte apre e chiude Giano
senza pensare a noi, seme di cavolo.
Non lo scordare: non esiste bosco
cui non insista sotto . . . il sottobosco.
La Storia da un lato e chi la fa,
dall’altro noi . . .

lenta lumaca e cavallo scosso,
lago quieto e blu mare mosso,
sapienza eccelsa e grande pazzia.
E ancora, astrusa prosa e poesia,
tsunami e al tempo stesso lieve brezza,
ma mai, mai mai, una schifezza,
da viver quindi con consapevolezza.
E inoltre posso dire con chiarezza
— pure se questo a qualcuno rode —
tripudio di parole e alto silenzio,
demone zozzo ed angelo custode,
gustoso limoncello ed assenzio,
nonchè dolor da gatto a nove code
e gioia per l’amor di cui si gode.
La vita è questa . . . ma guarda un po’ tu! . . .
potrebbe adattarsi ogni parola
ad una donna. E pertanto, su’,
sceglietene, amiche, anche una sola,
e forza, dite — okkei? dateci giù! —
se vi sentite – che so?! — “mare blu” . . .
“angeli” . . . “limoncello” . . . e anche di più!
Ovvio, omettendo quel che non si addice,
diciamo per esempio . . . “Beatrice”,
che era “troppo” in tutto, e perciò
potete eliminarla. Sbaglio o no?
Anche perché, e qui non dico balle,
mi è stata sempre un poco sulle palle…..

You know, that electric field sounds intriguing, but all those other effects would just be plain distracting, wouldn’t they? How would one get the turtledoves to harmonize with the organ notes? I guess people found media overwhelm quite the novelty then ~ these days to get all that we only need to plug in and press buttons…

I think customers were attracted to the novelty and trasgressive unconventionality of the whole situation. And if the cooing of the doves did not accord with the melodies of the organ, perhaps they did not even notice it, all tense not to miss the exact moment in which they hoped to be able to hear the ringing of the bells of orgasm in their heads😉❤️🙃
