I am sometimes asked, ‘Why do you spend so much of your time and money talking about kindness to animals when there is so much cruelty to men?’ I answer: ‘I am working at the roots.’ (*)
George Thorndike Angell was born on 5 June 1823, and died in 1909.
He was an American lawyer, philanthropist, reformer, and advocate for the humane treatment of animals, known as “the Friend of Animals.”

On Saturday 22 February 1868, Washington’s birthday, an incident of abuse in which two horses were raced to death, inspired George T. Angell to form the MSPCA (Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
On that occasion, two horses were driven over 40 miles, from Boston to Worcester, at an average speed of fifteen and two sevenths miles per hour. each pulling two men on rough roads in a race that terminated in the death of the animals.

He wrote of this in his autobiography:
“When I saw record of this cruel race, my determination was at once taken. I said to myself, β€œSomebody must take hold of this business, and I might as well as anybody.”

Motivated by this incident, he created the MSPCA, in order to secure the humane treatment of animals.
He also coined the motto for the organization: β€œGlory to God, Peace on Earth, Kindness, Justice and Mercy to Every Living Creature.”
Only twelve weeks after the fatal horse race, Angell had already managed to pass Massachusetts’s first anticruelty laws through the State congress.

He was also part of the anti-vivisection movement, against the adulteration of foods and the use of toxic materials in household products

  1. I am so passionate about animal rights too! I just released a blog about teaching our kids to respect and love animals. We can learn so much from animals. Truly! It is terribly upsetting when they are subjected to abuse.

    1. I love animals: now I have just a dog (she was my mother’s pet and now she is with me) but I’ve always had dogs, cats, rabbits
Birds are welcome in my garden: I often talk to them too, besides having a continuous dialogue with Sissi, my dog
