24/25 September: Saint Anathalon

St. Anathalon was the first recorded Bishop of Milan, Italy, who  lived between the end of the 2nd century and the beginning of the 3rd-century. He is honoured as a Saint in the Catholic Church and his feast day is on September 25 in Milan.
Yet, according to another tradition, he was the first bishop of Brescia, where his feast day is celebrated on September 24.

Almost nothing is known about his life except that he was bishop of Milan and died during a pastoral trip in Brescia, which was under his jurisdiction.

In the town where I live, Carate Brianza, St. Anathalon’ s statue rises on the church square. He is holding a cross, and is placed on an elaborate baroque stone column, positioned on a granite pedestal. The statue could date back to the beginning of the eighteenth century.

We love this statue, and we have long stopped wondering who St.Anathalon was.
