Joe Cocker would have turned 77 today.
One of the greatest white blues and soul singers was born in England on 20 May 1944.
His tenth studio album released in April 1986, dedicated to his mother, Madge, who died when he was recording , contains the track “You Can Leave Your Hat On”
The album eventually went Platinum on the European charts.
You Can Leave Your Hat On
Baby take off your coat
Real slow
Take off your shoes
I’ll take off your shoes
Baby, take off your dress
Yes, yes, yes
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on
Go over there, turn on the lights
All the lights
Come back here, stand on that chair
Get up woman, that’s right
Raise your arms up in the air
And now shake ’em
You give me reason to live
You give me reason to live
You give me reason to live
You give me reason to live
Sweet darling
(You can leave your hat on)
Just leave your hat on, girl
A little wild man
(You can leave your hat on)
Leave your hat on
(You can leave your hat on)
(You can leave your hat on)
Suspicious minds are talkin’
They’re tryin’ to tear us apart
They don’t believe in this love of mine
They don’t know what love is
They don’t know what love is
They don’t know what love is
They don’t know what love is
I know what love is
And baby, put it my way
(You can leave your hat on)
And just leave your hat on now
They don’t wanna
(You can leave your hat on)
Won’t you do that for me, babe?
(You can leave your hat on)
And just leave your hat on, girl
(You can leave your hat on)
“You Can Leave Your Hat On” is a song written by American singer-songwriter, composer, and pianist Randy Newman, who wrote it when he was about 26 years old, in the late 1960s, considering it just a joke.
However, as he grew older he began to take it more seriously and included it in his 1972 album “Sail Away”.
It appeared to be a risqué song in which the singer invites his lover to slowly remove almost all her clothing, but in a radio interview in 2013 he said that he had not intended to write an overtly sexy song, but rather viewed the character “as a fairly weak fellow”.
Other artists saw it as a swaggering expression of sexuality and adapted it accordingly. Joe Cocker recorded an irresistible version for his 1986 album Cocker, which was used as the soundtrack for Kim Basinger’s striptease scene in the 1986 Adrian Lyne film 9½ Weeks, a movie that was equally explicit as this song.
Eleven years later Tom Jones recorded it for another stripping scene, this time male, in the British movie, The Full Monty, and the song ,considered a striptease anthem, is still used by strippers.
In 2018 Newman told the BBC that he wished he had thought of Cocker and Jones’s arrangements, and had when asked why they were more successful with the song he replied: “Maybe they have sex different than I do!”
Puoi tenere il cappello
Bambina togliti il soprabito
molto lentamente
Togliti le scarpe
Ti toglierò le scarpe
Bambina, togliti il vestito
Si, si, si
Puoi tenere il cappello
Puoi tenere il cappello
Puoi tenere il cappello
Va’ laggiù, e accendi le luci
tutte le luci
Torna qui, sali su quella sedia
Alzati donna, così va bene
Alza le braccia in aria
e adesso scuotile
Mi dai una ragione per vivere
Mi dai una ragione per vivere
Mi dai una ragione per vivere
Mi dai una ragione per vivere
Dolcezza
(Puoi tenere il cappello)
tieni solo il cappello, ragazza
Un piccolo uomo selvaggio
(Puoi tenere il cappello)
Puoi tenere il cappello
(Puoi tenere il cappello)
Tieni su il cappello
(Puoi tenere il cappello)
(Puoi tenere il cappello)
Menti sospettose stanno parlando
Stanno cercando di separarci
Non credono in questo mio amore
Non sanno cosa sia l’amore
Non sanno cosa sia l’amore
Non sanno cosa sia l’amore
Io so cos’è l’amore

Wonderful song. So he has a fetish for hats. LOL. Men view love differently from women–after all we are from different planet.

Interesting to read the story behind the words, especially the difference between the writer’s meaning and it’s eventual use.

Great song, great post. Actually, great movie too – childishly nicknamed 91/2 Inches all those years ago! Cocker’s voice is amazing, remember his singing With A Little Help From My Friends at Woodstock (I’m not old enough to have been there!)? Clip might be on YouTube somewhere. Thanks again! Gx

Grande Joe Cocker.
Ciao Luisa 🙂

So many of Randy Newman’s songs are humorous and edgy, some even make me uncomfortable, but I think that’s part of his motivation. I saw Joe Cocker in his earlier days at a music festival in the U.S., amazing performer! Nice article.
