🎶Domani è un altro giorno/ Tomorrow Is Another Day🎶

E’ il titolo della canzone che richiama la frase finale (“Penserò a tutto ciò tutto domani, a Tara. Allora saprò sopportarlo. Domani, troverò un modo per riconquistarlo. Dopotutto, domani è un altro giorno!”) del kolossal librario e cinematografico “Via col vento”, che ho citato ieri.
Sto parlando di quella incisa nel 1971 da Ornella Vanoni, con il testo in italiano scritto dal paroliere Giorgio Calabrese, molto assai bravo nell’adattamento di testi stranieri.
Questa canzone infatti la cover italiana di “The Wonders You Perform” , scritta da Jerry Chesnut e cantata da Tammy Wynette.

Come ho detto, il titolo richiama la frase finale di “ Via col vento.”
Ma mentre nel film la frase “ Domani è un altro giorno” viene pronunciata da una lacrimante ma speranzosa Rossella O’Hara/ Vivien Leigh, la protagonista della canzone è molto meno ottimista perché sta facendo un poco lusinghiero riepilogo della propria vita.

La versione di Calabrese è molto diversa dall’originale, di cui conserva solo un elemento, il rapporto con la fede, che tuttavia nel testo italiano è, come tutto il resto, caratterizzato dalla disillusione. (“Proviamo anche con Dio, non si sa mai”).

Il titolo “The Wonders You Perform/ Le meraviglie che compi” prende spunto dal primo verso di un celebre inno religioso inglese scritto nel 1775 da William Cowper: “God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform/ Dio si muove in modo misterioso per compiere le Sue meraviglie”, che parla dell’imperscrutabilità dell’agire divino.

La canzone fu scritta da Jerry Chesnut che all’epoca era della cantante di musica country americana Tammy Wynette, come una canzone gospel sui “miracoli di Gesù” e su come aiuta a guarire nei momenti difficili.

Vi offro la traduzione di questa canzone fatta tre anni fa dal nostro caro amico Marghian, che ci ha lasciati ormai da tempo, mantenendo anche le sue annotazioni:

Ho visto le ombre del dubbio disegnarsi nei volti di coloro che sono amati (“the loved” nel senso de “i cari”, in ambito “funebre”) mentre tristi deponevano un mazzo di fiori sopra una piccola tomba, chiedendosi perché un bambino viene chiamato a venire al mondo per vivere solo un istante e poi morire (me lo chiedo anche io, non solo per chi more da piccolo: anche 100 anni, sono nulla, quando sono finiti. Spero ci sia “dell’altro”, che la nostra essenziale natura di esseri senzienti non sia solo “fisica” e “temporale” ma anche trascendente…- *nota del traduttore 🙂 ), e che avresti potuto salvare.
Ma io credo che ai tuoi occhi questo bambino fosse qualcosa di speciale, e volevi che fosse con te, su questo non ho dubbi. Quindi, con le braccia aperte, ti sei espresso in modo così semplice, da rendermi conto che gli altri non capiscono il modo in cui sei riuscito a portare le cose a compimento (work it out= lavorarlo su= farcela, riuscirci)
Una volta ho visto un giovane crescere fino a che fosse vicino alla età della conoscenza, della maturità; poi osservai che qualcosa successe alla sua mente, nessun medico poté porvi rimedio, come avevo sospettato. E mi meravigliai del modo (strano) di essere “gentile”.
Tentarono il tutto per tutto invano, ed io ero lì presente quando spiegarono ai familiari il motivo per il quale il ragazzo cadde in uno stato di trance. Io immagino che tu abbia allora guardato nel futuro (che avrebbe vissuto da normale), e lo abbia visto voltarti le spalle: lo amavi così tanto da che volevi che questa possibilità si verificasse.
Ci è voluto molto amore per morire, per una peccatrice come me. posso indovinare che sia per il fatto che tu non abbia potuto rinunciare a me. This is the title of an Italian song that recalls the final phrase (“I’ll think of it all tomorrow, at Tara. I can stand it then. Tomorrow, I’ll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.”) from the literary and cinematic masterpiece “Gone with the Wind.”
It was recorded in 1971 by Ornella Vanoni, with the Italian lyrics written by the lyricist Giorgio Calabrese, very skilled in adapting foreign texts.
This song is indeed the Italian cover of “The Wonders You Perform”, written by Jerry Chesnut and sung by Tammy Wynette.

As I said, the title recalls the final phrase (“After all, tomorrow is another day”) from “Gone with the Wind”.
While in the movie, the phrase “Tomorrow is another day” is uttered by a tearful but hopeful Scarlett O’Hara/Vivien Leigh, the protagonist of the song is much less optimistic because she’s giving a rather unflattering summary of her own life.
The lyrics by Calabrese are very different from the original, of which they retain just an element, the relationship with faith, which however in the Italian text is, like everything else, characterized by disillusionment (“Let’s try even with God, you never know”).
The title takes inspiration from the first verse of a famous English religious hymn written in 1775 by William Cowper: “God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform”, which is about the inscrutability of divine action.
“The Wonders You Perform” was written by Jerry Chesnut, who at the time was the brother-in-law of American country music singer Tammy Wynette, who recorded it in 1970. It was written as a gospel song about the “miracles of Jesus” and how it helps to heal in difficult times.
