Amy Winehouse was born in London on 14 September 1983: she would be thirty-eight today
The English singer-songwriter was admired for her song writing and her immediately recognisable contralto vocal range and soul-jazz style.
Her second and final album, “Back to Black”, released in 2006 is predominantly based on her tumultuous relationship with Blake Fielder, then-ex-boyfriend and future husband, who had temporarily left her.
Also in the song “Me and Mr. Jones” she seems cursing out an ex-lover who made her miss a concert, so now she’s not inviting him to another gig because she doesn’t want anyone to stand in between her and the singer.
The song title is a nod to the 1972 Billy Paul classic “Me and Mrs. Jones” which is about a couple who are cheating on their partners.
In Amy’s song, Mr. Jones is the man she wants to meet
Nobody stands in between me and my man
It’s me and Mr. Jones
(Me and Mr. Jones)
What kind of fuckery is this?
You made me miss the Slick Rick gig
(Oh, Slick Rick)
And thought I didn’t love you when I did
(When I did)
Can’t believe you played me out like that
(Out)
No, you ain’t worth guest list
Plus one of all them girls you kiss
(All them girls)
You can’t keep lying to yourself like this
(To yourself)
Can’t believe you played yourself like this
(Out)
Rulers one thing but come Brixton
Nobody stands in between me and my man
Cause it’s me and Mr. Jones
(Me and Mr. Jones)
What kind of fuckery are we?
Nowadays you don’t mean dick to me
(Dick to me)
I might let you make it up to me
(Make it up)
Who’s playing Saturday?
What kind of fuckery are you?
Side from Sammy you’re my best black Jew
(Best black Jew)
But I could swear that we were through
(We were through)
I still wonder ‘bout the things you do
Mr. Destiny 9 and 14
Nobody stands in between me and my man
Cause it’s me and Mr. Jones
Mr. Jones
(Me and Mr. Jones)
The lyrics are addressed to a nameless man with whom the singer is having an on-and-off relationship. To her annoyance he has already made her miss a show by Slick Rick, a rapper who was popular in the ’80s, also known as Prick, the Ruler
Now she doesn’t want anyone to prevent her from attending another concert and to stand in between her and this singer, who is never mentioned by name. Anyway, there are a lot of references to American rapper Nas , whose real name is Nasir Jones, who would become good friends with Winehouse.
In 2005, the year before “Back to Black” came out. there was a Nas concert at Brixton Academy, in London, and in the last lines of the song both his daughter, Destiny is mentioned, andthe coincidental fact that Nas and Amy share the same birthday (“9 and 14” : September 14th).
In the song she also alludes to legendary entertainer Sammy Davis Jr., the only non-white member of Frank Sinatra’s “Rat Pack”, who converted to Judaism.
The song was initially called “Fuckery.”
Ciao cara Luisa e buon pomeriggio 😘

You may have heard the interpretation, Luisa, that the song Me and Mrs. Jones is a lovesong to heroin. I don’t think this interpretaton has anything to do with Amy Winehouse’s song; but I have not been able to shake the belief that Me and Mrs. Jones is not about relationship between humans…….Sarah

Yes, I know that tn the 1960s, heroin and its addicts, dealers, were called jones and Mr. Jones. and some say that Me and Mrs Jones may be about heroin. But I’m not sure about that
Thank you Sarah for your interesting observation

Dante died on this day 700 years ago, that’ll be great if you write couple of strings about it.

I’ve already written some posts on details about Dante’s life or work. Dante is too great a poet to be limited to one article

Buona serata Luisa cara! ❤
