Cap 12: Anna Lolli (14)
e poi m’accoccolavo a te vicino
continua
As I said, Anna Lolli was also the name of Gabriele’s paternal grandmother, a very important figure in his childhood, in addition to his beloved mother, Luisetta De Benedictis, with whom he had an almost mystical relationship, a unique love. He said, “She made me like a resemblance of a veiled image of the angel whose name I bear.”
Grandmother Anna Giuseppa Lolli was the adopted mother of Gabriele’s father, Francesco Paolo Rapagnetta, whose parents were Camillo Rapagnetta and Rita Olimpia Lolli, Anna’s sister. The couple had eight children, and the last was Francesco Paolo.
Since Aunt Anna Giuseppa, who had married a rich merchant and owner named Antonio D’Annunzio, could not have children, they decided to adopt their nephew Francesco in 1851, when he was already 13 years old. Consequently he added the surname D’Annunzio to his original surname Rapagnetta.
Later, with the approval of his natural father, he decided to renounce the old surname and to take only the surname of his adoptive father. Therefore Gabriele at birth was baptized D’Annunzio.
As for the Christian name, Gabriele was the name of one on Antonio D’Annunzio’s brothers, who had died at sea.
It is said that at Gabriele’s birth also grandmother Anna put a sort of spell on him: she gave him a pair of diamond earrings. It was a tradition from Abruzzo to give female jewels to the first male child of a young couple, as a hope of happiness and promise of a future happy marriage.
D’Annunzio always remembered grannie Anna with great tenderness. She was the person who comforted him in his moments of sadness, pampered him, walked with him in the garden and told him stories before he went to sleep.
He dedicated some poems to her, the first of which, written in 1875 is the following:
Grandmother
In winter you wore a bonnet
whose ribbons were white like your face,
and in the evening you knitted
sitting beside the table, next to the lamp.
Quickly I learned the sacred history
and then I settled close to you
to hear you tell the tale
of the Blue Dragon and Guerrin Meschino.
And when I was about to fall asleep
you took me to my room
and made me sleep to the sound of your kisses.
Closing my eyes I saw a dance
of sweet, splendid and fleeting dreams.
smiling in the flowers
to be continued
LA NONNA
Tu una nonna buona, affettuosa
sicuramente sei, ai tuoi nipoti
porgi frasi gentili ed ogni cosa,
qualunque questa sia, e i loro moti
di vita ben giustifichi . . . sei rosa
che profumi questa casa e fai gioiosa
(Cassandro)

That’s a wonderful poem, Luisa. While I am not a fan of his unconventional lifestyle, I like the idea that ”One must make one’s life as one makes a work of art.” Although, in my case, it wouldn’t be about being famous or living an extravagant lifestyle. It would be more about practising generosity and kindness, staying hopeful and positive and living with Intentionality. Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful Sunday xx

That is a beautiful poem. I think in his younger years he was not so infected with the pretentious semicoherency which that century and the next saw become increasingly fashionable.

That was interesting history. I find it interesting that ….”she gave him a pair of diamond earrings. It was a tradition from Abruzzo to give female jewels to the first male child of a young couple”. It seems a bit odd to me since I am not sure what a male would use female jewels for other than giving it to a future fiancé. But I guess it is superstition (hope of happy marriage).

You are right, the tradition/superstition of giving female jewelry at the birth of a male meant wishing for a happy marriage🙏🌹🙏
